Castrol GTX

Hi Folks, Happy New Year....

I just did an oil change for my mother-in-law. I decided to use Castrol GTX and a PureOne filter. I thought I would give GTX a try as I have never used it before. As I began pouring, I found it odd that the color of the oil has a greyish color to it, versus a golden color like all other oils I have used. Why is this?

If the cap lock was still on i wouldnt worry about it, GTX is good oil .

Dark brown, gold, or honey colored,OK. But grey? OH OH!

What does it look like on the dipstick?

No...the lighting in my garage is pretty good. I use a clear glass measuring cup to measure and it looks grey in color. Nothing like the traditional golden color of every other oil I have ever used. I am not concerned, just though it was kind of odd.

It looks fairly normal on the dip stick...but it is 5W20, so the film is pretty light in color.

You never know what's in a container, perhaps including a bottle of GTX.

I once chug-a-lugged about half of a Dos Equis long neck and immediately dropped to my knees almost unconscious. After vomiting & recovering a few minutes later, I had the presence of mind to seal the bottle with tape and take it in to the local beer distributor the next day. He sent the contents to the bottler in Mexico requesting an analysis.

The bottle contained a solvent used to pre-flush bottling lines prior to an occasional detergent & water rinse.

Hmmm....haven't heard or seen of a greyish substance in oil. GTX is a solid oil. We ran our Grand Marquis to 260,000 miles on the stuff with no problems.

You could have sued them.

Check the color on the dipstick. If you really are nervous, drain it and do another change.

I received adequate compensation from both the distributor & bottler without a suit...I kept a separate sample of the bottle contents and demanded a copy of the analysis in case of any latter issues.

gtx 5/20 is weird, it kinda smells like atf and the stuff left at the bottom of the bottle is grey. i have a friend that only runs gtx 5/20 in his honda,he bought new, its well over 200k now and running stong. he changes the oil around 6k. all highway miles tho

GTX smells different and is a slightly different color when compared to say, Pennzoil conventional. It works fine though, no reason to drain.

Just put 4qts in my Civic today and I noticed that it was a darker golden yellow color than other oils I have used but no worries, GTX has a very good reputation.

I just changed my oil yesterday and used Castrol gtX 5w20 and it was nice clear yellow. Castrol will range and change from yellow to amber and sometimes just relly dark brown. I have never seen Castrol or any new oil(except Arco Graphite) come out of the bottle Grey. You confirmed that it was grey by putting it in a clear bottle. I would definetely drain it and change it, especially since it isnt your car, but the motherinlaw. Castrol GTX is a first class oil. I think you may be the victim of a scoundral, returning used oil or some foul play. Castrol GTX should not be Grey.

Castrol states on their bottles color variance is a natural occurence and has no bearing on efficacy of the oil or something to that effect, if you are too worried take it back and complain. I know it is a pain though. I just might do that though.

You might take it back and complain because of the color?
Assuming that is a joke, clearly it doesn't matter at all.
