Castrol GTX

Regarding GTX...I use Pennzoil conventional, but use to use GTX when I first began driving. I know that many like GTX as a conventional in hot climates, but does the 5w30 GTX flow as good, or does it flow better than YB 5W30 in colder temps? I know that syn is the way to go for optimal cold flow, but I stick to conventional simply due to the fact I prefer short oci's.

Dunno about the flow, but GTX 5w30 seemed to be consumed more slowly than 5w30 Pennzoil Platinum in my 3.8L N/A GM. About 3K to need a pint added, as opposed to 2800 miles with the PP.

Castrol (BP) doesn't post a lot of detailed specs for its oils. GTX will be fine in the winter, but my 'guess' would be that Pennzoil conventional has better cold specs overall.

Seriously, though, use whatever is cheapest and/or easiest to get......

I used GTX for a long time but now use Pennzoil Conventional in my Camry.

Though I occaisionally use GTX based on certain factors.
Like if I get a good deal on it. Or if the car is going to be in a hot enviroment. (Cause it's thicker at temp)

HTHS for 30 weight GTX down here does not meet the specification for ILSAC GF4 (has 2.8, needs 2.9) so i don't really trust GTX in our market at least.

What is Crinkles talking about here, or what does he mean by this statement? I don't understand. I thought all name brand conventionals and no-name brands for that matter are GF4 rated...??

I have a bottle of GTX sitting next to me. Says it exceeds ILSAC GF-4/GF-3/GF-2. This is in 5w30 grade.

oh it says that here too but the HTHS is below spec regardless

20 wt oils have a minimum HTHS of 2.6
30 wt oils, 2.9

GTX is not great in cold, but has good volitility. PZ is good in cold. Trade-offs are part of blending.

This chart only shows Pennzoil Platinum for any of the Sopus products. I'm talkng about conventional oil. GTX compared to YB... Is it just me, or was I viewing the chart correctly? This does not compare Castrol GTX to conventional Pennzoil. It seems to me that GTX as a conventional oil would perform pretty well in an average vehicle for winter in the midwest?
But compared to Pennzoil conventional? That's what I still want to know.

It shows Formual Shell that is a Sopus product too.

I'm always leary of Amsoil charts. It is not always apples to apples. I wonder if they leave off the oils the oils that out perfomr Amsoil.

I belive that Amsoil make a good product, I really do. I just dont drink all the Kool-aid they promote.

I also dont know why Amsoil did not post the weights of all the other oils in the chart. Did they test them all, then post the one with the worst results?

Interesting that the Kendall and Trop-Artic performed differently. I thought they were the same oil?

Since I've been using GTX I haven't had any sludge dumped on top of my car!!
