I was just reading a seperate post where someone made the comment that Castrol GTX is almost like synthetic? Wher they referring to SM dino's in that all SM dino's are close to synthetic, or is there something I don't know about Castrol GTX?

not even close. The public opinion is that it is a good dino oil, with good additives and regular Group II base stock.

But if you compare to the non GC Castrol Syntex, then yeah, synthetic is just a marketing term.

That can be their new advertising campaign.

"Castrol GTX...Almost Synthetic"

Seriously though, i think Castrol GTX is no more synthetic than Walmart Supertech is... It is still not a bad oil, just kinda pricey when compared to what else is available for less.

well, they were likely referring to the fact that the new SM rating is so much better, but I agree that comaparing it to syn is not right

Nah, there's nothing significant you don't already know about Castrol GTX. GTX, like virtually all current quality conventional motor oils, gets a boost with the addition of some Group II+ or Group III to its primary Group II base oil content, so in that regard SM Castrol GTX is "closer" to a full synthetic than prior generations were. The gap will close a bit more when the next API service designation, "SN"*, is introduced year after next. There'll still be significant differences when compared to a full synthetic, though.

*Fortunately, SM will probably be Group I base content's last hurrah as still used by a few bottom-feeder regional independent blenders.

I think they meant that GF4 SM rated GTX delivers excellent performance with reasonable OCI's.

I'm not a big Castrol GTX fan, but when Target had it for 48 cents per quart....I literally went to 10 different Target stores stocking up.

I read this online test article on AMSOIL's website where they compared AMSOIL to several other synthetic and conventional motor oils. Castrol GTX seemed to do quite well. As for the validity of the test results I don't know, I'm not well researched in motor oils yet.

I am the one that said it was as close to synthetic that a dino oil can get to.

And grbr95, I was not comparing it to a synthetic so if you want to start another thread just to make me look bad than that is out of line.

GF4 rated Castrol GTX is a highly refined oil with a basestock and additive pack that is much better than Supertech.

If you feel the need to be immature, I think there are some cartoon sites you can post on.

Well, in these days, the lines are often blurred. No, GTX isn't that close to the great synthetics alright, but then there's also a lot of "synthetics" that's awefully close to dino. at 2x the price.

Eh....

Very true, the line between synthetics and dino oil is being blurred more with every revamp in refining quality.

would someone briefly sum up what exactly about non german castrol syntec makes it not really a synthetic motor oil

Edit: nevermind guys i found my answers

We need a new word instead of lumping everything into the synthetic category.

How about this....

PAO/Ester based = Synthetic

DeWaxed/Total GrpIII = Microtreated

Containing part GrpIII = MicroBlend

Lighten up, dude.

This is an online forum. A little humor never hurt anyone! In fact, this is the first time I (literally) laughed out loud today, so give mechtech a break.

Immature? Yes, just like the Simpsons cartoon show is immature.

Funny as heck? You bet! (Reminds me of Jim Rome refering to Martina Navratalova as "Martin.")
