yeah i was thinking that rotella 5w40 might be a little beneficial to my truck it has about 180k miles now. although i know that isnt too many miles for the 4.9l straight 6. we haul a cabover with the family threw the mountains for camping. camping is the only way i could live in the heat here. i work outside on roofs and in attics all summer long. its about 30-40 degrees cooler up in the mountains.keeps my sanity

Not too many at all. I have seen a few go 500,000 before major problems.

4.9L is probably one of the best 6 cyl engines ever built and is pretty much bullet proof. I'd use a good 5W30 and call it a day. For extended OCI's or the hot Arizona summers a synthetic is going to be a better choice. For a good OTC oil I'd run Pennzoil Platinum and save a few $$ over Castrol Edge, PP has proven itself many times over. I'd let others experiment with Edge and see what kind of results come in before I plop my hard earned $$ down.

yeah the 4.9l is one of the oldest and most reliable motors ever. the 4.0l jeep motor was a great one too

im going to go with rotella 5w40 and a motorcraft oil filter on my next change

fyi if anyone cares. i went into walmart 2day and they had 1 gallon jugs of rotella 5w40 on sale for 15 bucks i picked up 3

Awesome. I have an 86 F150 with the 5.0, and I recently switched it to Rotella T Synthetic 5w40. And I love the stuff. I like the idea of a 5W-40, and I like knowing it has a strong add pack. Plenty of zinc.

I don't know how long I will run it for each OCI, though, it kills me to wait so long to change the oil. It's only been in there for almost 1000 miles, though. Got a lot of time to figure out when, lol.
