Castrol Edge decision - 5w or 10w

I don't think Castrol EDGE 10w30 will be as effective as a high mileage synthetic. All it does is resist shearing better and gets thicker faster as the temperature drops. The reason why 10w30 is recommended in hotter climates is because conventional oils tend to shear in warmer weathers and 10w30 shears less than 5w30. However, when you start talking synthetics, this factor is for all practical purposes eliminated from the discussion.

You should be more worried about seals which is what the High Mileage oils are for. I believe Valvoline has a synthetic version of their MaxLife but I haven't had any luck finding it. I've found high mileage versions of M1 at Walmart though.

Honestly, you should be fine with any oil but I understand if you want to use the most piece-of-mind product possible for your car.

Have you ever considered an oil cooling kit?

thanks for the comment ...geesh cooling kit ...hmmm no ..having even considered it ...my car runs dead center according to by temp gauge in my car (hehe ..OEM gauge) ..it does get hot here in Fla but the humidity here and the fact that I am practically on the beach I am really not worried about heating as much as you said my seals and gaskets ...that's what I am worried about ..so if Castrol Edge wouldn't be a good decision in that logic ...than I'll stick with going with another brand ..is there any brand on sale right now that, like CE has right now, would be a good choice for my high mileage Corolla ...?

I have a 02 Honda Accord, I have used Edge in with no problems, if you don't have a leak now, using edge, or any other kind of motor oil that is of recent make off the shelf etc will not cause you any leaks, nor any problems. In fact it's much better in my opinion that a car has miles on it, I have seen far more problems with leaks, seals etc with engines that have sit not being used, than one that has been used. Use what you want, I live in Georgia, I have close to the same climate as you, maybe not as hot, but a factory OEM cooling system does just fine, along with many oils. That Corella will love Edge, and my vote goes for 5w30.

Maxlife is also a great oil not trashing either, however my choice would be Edge for sure
