They must bring in proper jugs of that, and Imperial Oil must end this 4.4 L jug business across the board, too!

So last time when Castrol Edge went on sale for $25 cdn / 5 litre jug I bought some. Now it's on for around $34 instead of the usual $53 cdn. Mobil 1 0w40 will be around $50 or so. Which one would you buy ?

Mobil 1 0w40 is never on sale. It's always 5w20/30 or 10w30.

Yeah, that's me.

I probably would've kept the factory fill in a bit longer but the Amsoil break-in oil is probably a good choice. Although it's more for built engines and is a conventional oil.

Motul 300V is made from ester base stocks and has lots of ZDDP and moly. I ran it after I bought some from a Subaru dealer that accepted Subaru bucks for it.

What is exactly the best ?

Best For for what ?
As recommended by BITOG ?
As recommended by the OEM manual in given operating conditions etc ?
By driving style ie Sunday Driver versus Spirited Life Risking style ?
Selecting the Oil with best OEM builder approval ?

BITOG is fast becoming the internet surgical centre of expertise administering the process for oil recommendation hair splitting procedure for oils.

Accepted BITOG definitions of the best:

-Car runs quieter
-Highest amount of metallic AW additives shown on a $30 voa
-Lowest wear ppm's between two oils based on two random $30 uoa's
-Car feels more powerful after an oil change.

Exactly.

Porsche says they are equal since they both meet the Porsche a40 spec,so if Porsche says they are equal exactly which hairs do you want to split.
Buy whichever is on sale at oil change time.

I've bought it on sale many times.

Mobil 1 0W-40 goes on sale regularly at Canadian Tire. I don't know what you're talking about.

I've run both in the legacy now. First was the castrol 0w-40, two ocis. Then one run of the M10w-40. Completely subjective, but the M1'felt' better in my car. I'm now running a mix of mostly M1 TDT 5w-40 and a quart of 0w-40 M1 as a summer run. Scored TDT on clearance this spring!

The straight M1 0w-40 seemed to be the smoothest. I've never been a Mobil fan, but picked up some deals and thought I'd try it. Personally, I'd run which ever is cheaper. I think they are both very high quality products.

Side note, I'm out of the GC stash so looks like either TDT or Synpower in the forester next time around. looking at mileage and oci, Synpower see,s more likely as should be headed in to winter then.

I found one UOA on Castrol 0w40, there are already many others for M1 0w40.

Comparing this UOA to M1 0w40 UOAs may show if one is better or not:

Not in my area. I'm talking about the jugs not the bottles.

Where are you finding actual jugs of M1 0w-40 in Canada? I'm not talking Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 0w-40, either. My Imperial Oil sell sheets do not show Mobil 1 0w-40 in anything except 1 L bottles.

Not really, I'm afraid. That's not what a $20 UOA is good for.

I must of got mixed up. I should of said I never see jugs of M1 0w40 available in CT stores in my area. Only one store carries the 0w40 which I have seen in 1 L. But those on sale are more expensive / litre than I can get Edge for in 5 L jugs when on sale.

Ahh, okay. In that case, the Castrol 0w-40 is hard to beat when on sale, since it is in jugs and does go on sale with the other Castrol offerings. As for M1, my Imperial Oil sell sheet was given some recent, minor updates, and nothing interesting was on there.

M1 0W-40 has well earned the status of being the benchmark for the grade

Compare to Castrol M1 SN 0W-40 has both a higher VI and HTHSV and has been tested to the nth degree. IMO there are no other OTC 0W-40s that can match it's spec's or performance. Even most expensive specialty oils fall short.

The fact that it can be had for 5 bucks/qt really makes it a no-brainer choice.

If I really wanted to use Mobil 0w40 I can get it in the States. I'm only 15 minutes away from Walmart in Niagara Falls New York. With our lower dollar and wait times at the bridge
I just wait till Castrol Edge goes on sale over here. Last month It was on for $24.99 for a 5 litre (5.3 U.S.qt) jug. Last week at $34 cdn.

The Wal-Marts here are a bit better lately regarding oils. I think my local one even has 5L/Qt. jugs of Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic. I've seen the quart bottles at another one near work. Sometimes my local one runs low on 0W-40 because of the Euro gearheads.....
