Oil change on a 2013 equinox 2.4. Unscrew the filter housing cap and the oil filter stays behind. That’s odd usually, it’s snapped into the cap. I didn’t think anything about it just pulled it out. It was when I went to install the new filter that I realized the endcap was still snapped into in the filter cap. Attached are some pictures. Can somebody tell me what brand filter that is? I used an AC Delco as a replacement and it seemed to fit OK. I’m not sure which brand was in there.

I actually see this quite frequently on filters that I dissect. It's never been a concern of mine because the metal caps are physically held in place by spring pressure when the filter is assembled. It only becomes an issue when the canister is cut open.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, this cartridge for a GM Ecotec engine. Very common for these to look ugly post use, very often smooshed looking. Can't recall seeing the endcap separated post use, but doubting it's a big issue in use. Similar to clean end cap popper on spin on filter.

The Hengst made OEM cartridge seems to do the best. That said, I've seen an anecdote where even one of those looked smooched post use. And then some have had good results with some aftermarket cartridges, even lower tier ones. Seems hit or miss. Some blame it on installation technique, but seen too many to think that is the main reason.

I had a similar issue with a Mobil filter several years ago (I imagine they have sorted that issue out by now). I've always had good luck with the ACDelco ones with the Hengst name on it. They typically come out with straight pleats still. I'm currently testing out a SuperTech one for the first time. I've done quite a few oil changes on my Ecotec over the years.
