Carquest Premium Sale

AAP don't want to give you a 99.5% at 20 micron filter at 40% discount.

I would suggest incognito tab on your 5g phone connection. Still might not work but your laptop on wifi was not going to work regardless of clearing cookies.
Cleared all cookies on my phone, and not using WiFi with the phone. Still no 40% off sale seen.

Incognito tab is preferred but it sounds like they are excluding your phone provider IP address as well.

I couldn't get a single VPN to work either so they're very deliberate and thorough who they don't want getting a discount.

Cleared all cookies on phone.
Phone not on WiFi.
Using an Incognito window on phone.
Still no 40% off sale seen.
Switched store location to Brooklyn NY.
Still no 40% sale seen.

Try a Syracuse, NY address.

Advance Auto Parts
1802 Teall Ave.
Syracuse, NY 13206.

NYH.
Same as above ... no 40% off sale. Price shown is $7.79.

So apparently, even with cookies cleared, using a phone off WiFi with an incognito browser window and using any AAP store address in the USA, it knows where I'm located.

Here's photos of the phone screen when doing the above. I had to take photos of the phone I was browsing on because it would not do a screenshot when in incognito (got a message it couldn't do it). Note the little incognito icon in the web address window, and phone is not on WiFi. Store location is Brooklyn, NY. Had to take 3 photos to get all the info. This has turned into a science project. 😄

Kind of. It uses your IP address and someone has decided which IP addresses they want to include and which to exclude.

My home internet is Comcast and when I check what location that corresponds to, different websites at different times will give different results but always a city within a 50 mile or so radius. My phone is T-Mobile and that IP address is also corresponding to a city within 50 miles.

Your phone IP address can more easily change, as you move around but there are also ways to just get a new one (like there is for your home one too).

In any case, when I used my laptop in incognito mode (after closing the incognito window down fully and reopening (in my experience that does a better job than clearing cookies even with an extension I have to clear cookies)) on my phone's hotspot, I can buy any Premium filter at any location for 40% discount. If I use my home internet, I don't get the discount.

Locations below are Seattle and Jersey City;

I totally believed it wasn't working for you!

Just bookmark the page and when you are out and about see if it works when your IP address changes or if you use someone else's wifi.

If so, then they basically know where I'm located. The FBI could knock on my door if they knew my IP address, lol.

I also tried an incognito window on my laptop, even went and cleared the cookies again while in the incognito window. Still no 40% off sale seen.

Well, just bought 5 of these and within my batch received 3 distinctly different filters 😔

From left to right:

-USA made, taller can, louvers inside, smaller holes, older looking box
-China made, white can, holes inside, gasket color matches ADBV
-China made, pale blue can, holes inside, gasket is black

Do I keep them, return some? Any concerns here?

So long as the louvers are sufficiently open on the one filter, they should all work well. I don’t see any issue.

As I said, if the first time you went in with a connection (be it home internet or phone), you did not see 40% off, then clearing cookies, incognito etc would not change anything on that connection.

The only reason to clear cookies etc is that if you change the IP address on that device, then you need the AAP website to forget the IP address it associated with that device.

So if you go out or use someone else's wifi and reopen a non incognito window that previously did not get the 40% discount, you are 100% not going to get the discount because AAP still remembers from the first time.

So my advice is to always open an incognito window if you check in future.

To highlight how AAP's website checks once and then bases it's decision on that first time, I can now go back to my home internet connection and get the 40% discount whereas before I could not on that connection.

Well, if AAP is not showing the 40% off sale to the whole location region I'm in, then doing any of the above wouldn't matter. They may be running that sale in only certain parts of the country for some reason.

AAP website runners:
"Hey, let's put the Carquest Premium oil filters on a 40% off sale, but let's make it only visible to people who only have a 1 in 100 configuration on their computer or phone, and also make it only applicable to every other house on the street based on their house number."

I was having a hard time getting the discount through the VPN but tried a bit more and it is definitely IP specific rather than location specific.

Many Seattle VPN servers were blocked but I managed to get one to work with discount:

Same with other locations. Some IP addresses blocked, some no discount, some discount.

Why would going through a VPN cause the AAP ad to change? They are either on 40% off sale or not in the area people are checking. When I went and picked up a Carquest Premium yesterday, I asked the guy at the counter if they were on 40% off sale and he knew nothing about it.
If their site is picking up your location a vpn will make it look like you're somewhere else. I don't know why but it appears the sale is regional. Just a way that it might work.

These filters are being recommended primarily because the quality is high when made in China / Vietnam. There are concerns with the Made in USA ones especially if they are made by Champ.

What are the date codes?

Strangest thing I've seen in a long time. Selective secret sales.

This is most likely price discrimination. They have some idea of income levels from IP addresses and other data and decide who a discount is and is not necessary for.

It's happening quite a lot;

Amazon, Staples and the Steam video game store vary the price by geographic location by up to 166%.
