CarQuest Extended Performance EP P84047

I believe synthetic media does have less resistant to flow. You should go read the first post on the oil filter section titled: What’s in your filter?

Fair, I have read all of that a few times over the past year but it’s always good for me to read again. In the end I will probably go with the Carquest EP or PG’s ultimate, at least for my standby generator where the “superior flow” seems most beneficial. It would be nice if the EP gave the best of both worlds for the extra money vs the CQ premium, but at least the EP didn’t give up so much efficiency below 30 microns for “flow” like the BOSS’s synthetic media.

It would be great if the flow difference between EP/ultimate and premium/EX could be quantified numerically (using appropriate units) as the efficiency is, but I appreciate the option for the EP anyway.

^^^ "Flow over efficiency" is a myth. The dP vs flow difference between well known brand filters isn't going to make any difference except maybe in a race car with a high flow pump running at near redline.

They do copy other filters parts, this one from the Boss media, or originally by Mann Germany. The Boss has a diamond shaped mesh. I think they even copied Toyota’s elongated base plate holes if not mistaken.
I stick to the Boss from USA where I live. Boss is a polyester media I wonder if they copied that aspect.
Smart manufacturer.
Was the Boss the first to use synthetic media? Or nylon backing?

Tell that to anyone who has had to service a over tightened filter housing. It's a cool tool, eliminates error, and does a very good job removing also.
I have changed the oil a few times on an inlaws Camry 2.5 with this set up. Fortunately I have the cap wrench from when another inlaw owned a RAV4 so the only issue I had with the Camry was the little metal thing that is removed to drain the housing was put on so tight that when I went to remove it the whole housing spun thus defeating the idea of not making a mess.

The filter in the OP is certainly nice looking and the specs seem awesome. When I went to Walmart the filter that seemed the best for this application was the $2.97 Supertech 9972....it had a thick filter media that looked similar to the Fram Ultra OG. The Fram filters had much thinner media.
Unfortunately, the last time I went to buy one of those Supertech's the media had changed to one similar to the thinner Frams.

I called PG. They make it. Soon a PG branded version will also be released called the Ultimate Synthetic.

And they just couldn't have strived to make it 20um or 18 um " to actually make it special and the king of filters"? Now it appears to be just "another also ran at 25um". Just another company putting 8 potato chips in a bag and charging $ 2.00. Then telling you the bag has nice foil stamping and colorful ink to show it is special.

I believe the reason for the EP/Ultimate is extended drain intervals up to 20k. Which means a big holding capacity. Also some including myself like the media backing. 99.5%@25 microns is no slouch.

It was probably Mann for this type, then they decided to use it in the Boss, and from my whip city light spot method, it was greatly improved over the original Mann. The original goes back into the 90’s you would have to do your own research to get more info.
I was talking about a direct look alike copy, PG could have copied the Fram. Maybe the patents haven’t run out on the Fram and probably too expensive to make with the heavy steel mesh.

It would be interesting to have a chronological history of oil filter construction.

I looked on Amaz for the Mann filters, there are so many knock offs from China with the copied construction of the Mann, like they do with Toyota cartridge filters.
No thanks.
I see years to 1998 for the Mann fleece cartridge, they now use in the Boss, but improved.

Looks like Donaldson claims they were the first synthetic media oil filter. Released in the early 80’s.

I thought it was about a Mann copy look alike with the plastic mesh, not about who was first with synthetic oil filters. I assumed Mann was not, or was, it doesn’t matter. The Asian manuf. copy all the time, saves money. This time was the Mann. Here is a donaldson in a Mercedes size, not synthetic, enjoy the efficiency rating and how they say nice things about protecting the engine with that rating.
I know you want everyone to use the oil filters you use, that’s ok, but I don’t care if others don’t want to use the Boss.

I don’t care who uses what filter. But I will honestly evaluate every filter I see. Even Pentius is on my naughty watch list. It use to be one on my favorites.

I don’t know, you seem to promote PG pretty often, as is your right to. No problem. Millions of cars on the roads millions of different ideas. Oil filters for car, check, all done.

If PG’s quality goes downhill I will no longer recommend them. Right now quality is excellent and consistent.
