Question: Should i do another running of a 'seafoam' type cleaner through the air intake?

My limited understanding leads me to believe that the combustion chamber of my oil burner get's dirty quicker than other vehicles. It's had blowby since the day i bought it. I believe that i need more than a fuel treatment once in a while. (I already did two Auto Rx cycles.)

I had someone run a top end cleaner through the intake valve. Like a 'seafoam' smoke show type of cleaning. This person used "mighty" auto products.

I did notice that this guy did NOT turn the engine off to let the chemicals soak in to the carbon. Is this guy giving me a half assed job?

(Again, i'm not expecting magic additives to fix my worn rings. Just trying to best control consumption.)

thanks

what vehicle and what engine? what is present oil used?
is the oil going by the rings? thru the PCV valve or down the intake valve stem seals?

compression test cold and dry and then hot and oil sprayed in will tell much about condition of rings/cylinders
does it smoke only when you let off gas totally from high rpm run up in lower gear?=usually intake valve guides worn or valve stem seals failed
are you getting blow by fumes out the PCV hole with valve removed?

are you certain that the engine is not running rich and fuel washing the oil out and causing oil burning? oil washes and burns off cylinder wall with fuel....oil thins and causes early failure of all bearings and camshaft system

a 15w40 HDEO or even a 20w50 HDEO may be something to try but only after an fuel dilution problems are ruled out...a 5w40 full synthtic if the funds are avail. for cold winter area OCI's

frequent PCV valve cleaning and replacement is critical on high blowby oil burners...

i stay away from the hype auto douche machines...

Steelhead, thanks for the response. And I really do appreciate you trying to help me with the oil burning. But several people have already gone over those issues with me (although I've never considered the possibility of running rich). And some people are just tired of hearing about it.

I actually enjoy driving my little car and I won't mind adding a quart every 1100 miles if needed. One reason that blowby has increased is simply because I'm now driving it faster. (if my car wasn't burning I'd get some mods and up the horsepower)

Anyway, back to point. After doing BIITOG searches I've decided that a second seafoam is warranted.

And yes, thicker oils seemed to burn less in my car. Next oil change i'll probably go with an HDEO with Moly. I think the Chevron HDEO has Moly. (or maybe i'll even use 'restore' and just not tell you guys)

I look in to the possible 'running rich' situation. Maybe it's contributing to consumption.

I did find that oil cap had a tiny leak. So there's one tiny problem solved.

Oh, and to answer your questions. It's a 91 civc DX with no mods. 1.5L five speed. Smokes at high rpms. I didn't notice it smoking AFTER taking the foot off the gas. I'll look at it again, while someone else revs it.

best way to test for intake valve stem seal oil leak is to have someone follow you down a hill at 30>40 mph and downshift into 2nd
large increase of blue oil smoke= valve stem seals or worn valve stems or guides

driving on level road at 40 mph and WOT gas pedal to the floor and big blue smoke cloud out back=worn rings/cylinder walls or plugged stuck shut PCV valve

burning oil smoke all the time is usually rod bearings gone or broken rings

quart every 1100 miles is NOT high oil consumption...hi revving manual transmission Honda's that are driven hard need to use some oil....most drivers have auto transmission Honda's or big American V8 iron that very seldom gets out of the lower end of the torque curve
get an auto transmission Honda and drive it Yuppie putt putt style if you are obsessing about 1100 mile per qt oil consumption

NO FEAR until you reach 500 miles per qt but that Honda may never hit that until 600k miles with oil/filter changes per manual and PCV changes

usually the timing belt/chain gears go from lack of maintenance and drive the valves thru the piston tops

every rice racer around here blows blue oil smoke rings....they have them chipped to the max with air/fuel running in the 10s or 11s...more gas in the oil than in the tank

just run a light vis. 5w30 syn such as Mobil 1 in that Honda with 8k OCIs and it will love you for another 500k
just like a good woman, ride her hard and put her away hot and steamy and she lasts forever

try to find a piece of modern American iron that will last like that, not going to happen

Steelhead,
That's a wonderfully written post.

It seems that your feelings towards little hondas are similar to mine.

I'll look at this again later when i have more time. Thanks.
