I have a 2000 Chrysler sebring 2.5 V6. so it was snowing and slick out the other day and i slid and hit a fire hydrant. radiator was toast and leaked everywhere, even worse the oil filter got ripped of and the oil was ran dry. I turned the car off after it ran for 1-2 minutes at idle. I turned it off but what did i do internally. After i fix everything will the engine still be destroyed or should i be ok

Answer: "Things to ask your mechanic."

We can say all that we want via an online forum. The true expert on the matter is the guy doing the work to fix everything, who can physically look at the damage.

Friend in Wisconsin had his engine replaced because of something happening like this.

He had full coverage and his total cost out of pocket for the repairs and engine was $250.00.

I think you'll be fine. No load at idle. I had a car do this, its oil pump lost its prime, and I idled it for a minute. No damage.

I agree that given the cold air coming in plus the fact that it was at idle, it should be minimal effect.

But it's true that the person opening it up and looking inside has the true situation.

Lost the radiator, and the oil filter and the car is still repairable? I can just picture the nose pushed all the way to the engine block/exhaust manifold. And the insurance will repair a 13 year old vehicle with that much damage? Whats the market value,$2500?

My wife had a reck in her new car last year. It was totaled after the repair shop realized the engine had locked up. It sat in the road after being hit and idling and leaked all the oil out til the engine was toast. I wouldn't trust it! Replace it!

Im just trying to get a few more miles out of this car. its my beater to get me through school. I dont have insurance for myself so im doing it myself. I just wanted some opinions. I dont want to pull the engine if i dont need to but dont want to throw a couple hundred at a junked engine.

I try to stay away from my redneck answers as i am going to school to be a tech. But my opinion is this. Put an oil filter on put oil in it. Amd start it up see how the engine feels and sounds if it sounds oknmay rev it a little to make sure there is no rods rattling if it sounds good i would assume its ok and fix it. You dont need to fix the radiator to do this just let it run a couple minutes and dont run it to long or youll overheat shouldnbe able to listen to it for 3-5 mins safely before you put an oil filter on it pull the drain plug amd see if you any metal shavings. This is what I would do.

Good to see there's some sense in you. If the engine is no longer usable, what have you got to lose by putting some oil and a filter into it? It won't overheat in the time it takes to decided whether or not it's usable.
