Although there are lots of oil to chose from the same grade/viscosity of different brands, why there are a lot of car manufacturers very strict on the oil that you put into the engine? It has to have their approval stamped on the jugs you buy. But if you follow their recommendation, those oil required are very hard to find in any auto parts stores.

Gm recommend's oil with it's "Dexos" blessing. In reality, it's no different, or better than anyone else's oil that doesn't say Dexos on the bottle. Oil company's feel if they pay for the right to print "Dexos" on the bottle, they will sell more oil because of it. My personal experience with using the branded oil is, I found my wife's car would use a qt in 750 miles of driving. That's with 35 k on the clock. Then GM admitted there was a ring / piston problem with the cars, that caused them to use excessive amount of oil. So, my thought was, if they can't build a engine correctly, why should anyone trust their oil recommendations?.,,,

Grade is pretty yesterday when it comes to a manufacturer approval and doesn’t go far in defining an oil’s characteristics. Which approval do you need that is hard to find?

Part of it is assuring a certain level of quality to back up their change frequency and another is the ongoing revenue stream from licensing.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

It seems to me, a lot of European cars have their own oil formula, or this is just a trick for you to buy their oils from the dealer or maybe to discourage DIYers. Like my mom's Volvo S60 requires VCC RBS0-2AE 0W-20 and my Jaguar requires STJLR 51.5122 0W-20 both are 0W-20 and I don't see these at auto parts stores. I read BMW, MB, Porsche, VW and Fiat have their own as well. There are some selling online, Castrol, Liqui Moly, Motul & Ravenol but I simply don't trust what's inside the bottle. This is really crazy. I have been changing my vehicle's oil for many years now and I put the best brand of oil there is in each everyone of them.

Do research on this forum, especially European section.
For oil to have let’s say BMW LL01 approval, oil sample is sent by oil blender to BMW for approval. BMW issues approval, and they can legally use it on bottles.
Those approvals are most stringent in industry and serve customers to not wonder what oil they should use. It is also cheap for blender to get that approval.
European approved oils are readily available in Wal Mart, NAPA, Auto Zone, AAP, online. You DON NOT have to buy oil from dealership!!!

Just what is the "best brand of oil" and why wouldn't you trust what's in a bottle from a major online retailer? Fear of counterfeit? Not at majors with a reputation. Switched contents? Again, not at the reputable online dealers.
I was wondering the same thing . " Best brand of oil .." Please share that with us .

Years ago got approved by HONDA corp. through e-mail to use 5w-20 in place of 0w-20 . Still have the e-mail in case of any issues . Haven't used 5w-20 .

Yes, that's actually crazy. Why exactly don't you trust them?

Counterfeit, Switched contents just like CleanSump said. Amazon has it's on fair share as well. I don't trust their 3rd parties.

I'll take that back. I should have said the best Brand of oil on Sale. Either of the 5 (Pennzoil, Mobil1, QS, Castrol, Valvoline). My Ford Escape is very picky, it runs well on Motorcraft, so be it.:)

If you have for example VW Passat 1.8T from 2004, your “best brand” on sale won’t work. It has to be VW502.00 approved.
There is BIG difference between your regular off the shelf Mobil1 5W30 and Mobil1 ESP 5W30 which is approved for VW504.00/507.00, MB229.52 etc.

I don't do the 3rd party sellers on Amazon and Walmart because I've read the stories on the 'net.
I trust Walmart perse, and the reputable places like FCP, eeuroparts, IDparts, ECS, Autohausaz, etc.

Approved oils usually pass specific test and have formulation that others oils not. Example from here some FCA, Renault or VAG engine/trans oils. Other question is if it's better or worse for car.

Personally I don’t believe revenue stream has anything to do with it. Approvals are not that expensive, roughly 5k.

Manufacturers simply want to ensure the oils used on the engines they are warranting are up to standard, especially for the OCI they are recommending. While it is more common for regular API/ILSAC oils to claim 10k interval is possible now, that was certainly not the case 5-10 years ago. German manufacturers have been using 10k+ OCI now for quite a long time. American and Japanese vehicles haven’t typically had this long of an OCI until more recently so the “regular” oils were just fine.

Yes , they did through their Customer Service . Took a day or 2 to get the (y) .

From owners manual of the FIT, no mention of 5w-20 .
