This isn't Facebook, where we need to like every post and tell each OP how each decision he makes is great, and to just go for it. People come here for advice, wisdom and experience. It's up to the OP to cherry pick the posts and advice that apply to him or seem the most logical and then make his own decision.

My previous post was based on a few things:

1. Experience: none of us has all of the details and none of us can make this decision for the OP, but we can infer from the information that was provided enough for a response that is based on a personal experience, not a position of higher ground.

My post was based on my own experience, when I made a decision to go from one payment to another without any benefit - I made a rash decision based on a limited research and possibly poor logic. So, I traded a vehicle that wasn't the most economical, but was one that I loved, for a car that was the biggest headache in my history of car car buying.

Had I come here for advice at that time, I may have listened to opposing opinions and made a better choice (or maybe not.) The point is, the OP needs to decide if any of us with a dissenting opinion from his and other posters warrants further, if any, consideration.

2. Indecision: the OP seems unsure of which package he wants at a time when he's seemingly ready to put pen to paper. If he's unsure of the package, then I have to ask if he's even sure of the car. I argue for spending more time thinking about each.

I can't imagine the deal he's being offered is so good that he can't afford to walk away from it. Historically, when has walking away from a dealership been a bad financial decision?

3. Finances: I don't presume to know the OP's finances, but had I known what I know now I probably would have started my post-undergrad life differently, with one of the perfectly fine used cars that were around at that time. This goes back to the experience thing.

Going along with the above, I'd hate to see you fall in love with the Dart, because it's not your Focus, and then feel like you want to trade it 2-3 years from now, effectively continuing a really [censored] "lease" cycle.

So, I don't intend to condescend, and the OP can completely disregard my post if he likes. If you do make the purchase, then I wish you luck and hope you like it.

this isn't epic like Nick who traded four new cars in 1.5 years. is that it? He's been quiet about his rides, I wonder if he bought a new car since then.

I have some great news. I take delivery tomorrow and they are giving me 11,000 for trade and ill have no rollover because the focus is eligible for vehicle buy back so we file lemon law which the dealership is doing for me. So ill be out nothing to get the dart.

ram_man: I would try and get the Dodge dealer to allow you a extended trial with the car you want to buy before you sign for it.
Ask them for use of the car for at least several days or so to be sure it meets your needs and expectations, they know you are serious about wanting the vehicle and they need to sell these so I think they will be agreeable. In any case the model you are choosing was the trim level that rated slightly better than average reliability surprisingly at CR. Other models with the 1.4L turbo had less than average reliability ratings.

Good luck and keep us posted.

you told the dealer the focus you are trading them is a lemon? I'm surprised they will take the car.

Good for you. If you like the car who cares, why ask opinions.

Me personally, I don't trust Mopar products, or Fiat products.

My wife and my father in law used to buy that stuff every time, and they were faced with frequent repairs.

They had dodges, plymouth, and Jeep.

Laying on my back in the garage fixing these things has tarnished the name for me personally.

I did drive a rental 2014 Ford Focus, and thought it was garbage from the word go. Mine had 15,000 miles on it and the transmission felt like it was slipping and that soured me on Ford for the next little while.

So we started driving Toyota's a few years ago and haven't looked back. Our cars do not have a ton of tech in them, and gizmos but it gets me and my wife to and from work trouble free. We typically buy base model cars.

I did rent a Fusion and a Lincoln MK sedan within the past year, that chassis is well done and I consider that a decent car. Different class of car though and more money.

Bottom line is if you are happy with your purchase then enjoy the car and have fun!

Get the thing undercoated if you live in salt spray areas, that is more important than any other option.

Either he got smart or got tired of being ribbed by BITOG and decided not to tell us about his new car purchase(s) :-)

I didn't notice a big difference between the 2.0 and the turbo Darts I drove. Because they were so close, and I actually thought the 2.0 was smoother it would be my choice for the price. Upgrading the radio will likely prove too costly to do, but I thought the standard radio was better than average. I really like the Dart in white myself. I think it looks much better in person than any pictures I have seen.

That said I liked the Focus a lot better than the dart. I liked the transmission except I thought it was trying to be too gentle on starts. It had more of a manual transmission feel to it, without having to shift. I would try taking your Focus to a different dealer if you are having problems. One dealer near me the worst place I have ever dealt with. Another near me is the best I have ever been to. I actually trust them and their prices are considerably less than the other dealers for parts and service. A good dealer can bake a big difference.

Having been down that road with a new vehicle, I know what a pain it can be. Once you have enough problems you notice every little thing it does and it is always on your mind. I almost gave up on my truck, but then I found a better dealer that made it right. I am glad they did because I do love my truck.

We all have to learn somehow.

You'd be in a lot worse financial shape once that Focus was out of warranty.

I wasn't going to chime in on the money thing, but had to after reading the quoted post.

In Canada we have a retirement scheme whereby you contribute to a registered account, the contributions are tax free (contributions can be up to 18% of income) and the returns on that account are tax free. You pay income tax at the end when you withdraw from the account, presumably after you retire when you are in a low tax bracket, and after years of tax-free investment returns.

Anyway, that's the background for what follows.

$1000 one-time contributed when you turn 18 (first year you are eligible) pays the same retirement income as $1000 per year every year from ago 40 to age 65.

Even if you have to forego the tax benefits, it remains that money you save in your 20's carries a bigger reward than money saved later in life. It's more important to make good financial decisions when you are young than when you are older.
