Car battery sizing learnings

I like the H-series numbering; it's sensible. Plus the batteries have those low-profile terminals making a better form factor and since length is the only variable it's pretty easy to see what can substitute.

I'm not a fan of how they're more expensive at the moment. I suspect the OE versions are just as cheap as anything else if not cheaper; they don't weigh much.

My current AGM H8 is still good after ten years. Hoping it gets through this cold spell and I haven't jinxed it.
Hopefully you own a battery tester and can check it periodically. They are very inexpensive these days and a worthwhile tool. I have owned a Schumacher BT175 digital tester for close to 20 years. I now have an Ancel BA101 as well. I try to check at least a couple times a year.

The three newest Toyotas in the family fleet all use DIN batteries. The JIS designations are LN1/LN2/LN3 I think. Which interchange to BCI 47/48 for LN1/LN1 I think. They’ll all stick with the stock size, either Costco Clarios or Deka(Napa/AAA). One will get a regular flooded battery.

The LN designations are part of the European Norm nomenclature.

The JIS system (D5301) incorporates physical characteristics into theirs (ie-"55D23L" for a low-capacity Group 35), but that makes them unwieldy. And their CCA rating is taken at a different temperature.

Cue the old joke about standards being so great that everyone has one.
