Wow! another pleasant childhood icon passes on. You know you're getting old when your tv favorites from your childhood(late 50's early 60's) die. I was never allowed to watch much tv when I was young(thanks Mom & Dad)but certain shows really bring back good memories

Truly amazing guys. Capt. K - well I thought he was old when I was a kid!

I gotta run back to the "bathroom job" but someone that has knowledge of both the Capt.'s and Mr. Roger's military careers should post them or provide a link...I will later if no one knows.

Bob Keeshan, later famous as television's "Captain Kangaroo," also enlisted in the U.S. Marines, but too late to see any action during World War II. Keeshan was born on 27 June 1927 and enlisted two weeks before his 18th birthday, months too late to have taken part in the fighting at Iwo Jima. A 1997 interview with Keeshan noted that he "later enlisted in the U.S. Marines but saw no combat" because, as Keeshan said, he signed up "just before we dropped the atom bomb."

I was born in 1972. Does anyone remember a show called Magic Garden? It was such a psychadelic hippie show. Of course I didn't know that at the time. Two women hosted it, Paula and Carol. They sat on a swing and played accoustic guitars. The best part was a bumblebee mascot named, I am not kidding, Do Bee. As in if you participate in an activity, you are a Do Bee. If we were to spoof that show now, you couldn't make up such a blatant drug reference.

i was born in '68, but i don't remember the magic garden.

for me it was sesame street, the electric company, mr rogers, cowboy bob, captain kangaroo, and zoom, the three stooges, and bugs bunny, tom slick, and godzilla movies.

i wrote a letter to mr rogers when i was in first grade and he wrote back (or someone did in his name), and i think my folks still have it.

the do bee thing didn't happen until high school.

I thought he was "old" also but in the late 50's I was "just a kid" and every adult was "old"

I read where he was 28 in 1955 when the show started and wore a gray wig and makeup to look older. Just imagine any Hollyweid person doing that now a days, except for a SINGLE role in the movies, and even that's rare

. They spend $$$$$$ to look young. Often times well past what nature intended

. This just shows that some of us are REALLY getting to be "senior citizens" sooner than we liked to be

So the local radio station yesterday was waxing on and on about their military careers (and no it was NOT conservative talk radio).....just all BS. Very interesting. I WAS fooled and am I willing to admit it!

Here's what they were saying on the radio:

1) Captain K. served with Lee Marvin, and Lee Marvin was talking about him on late night TV. They both won awards, but Capt K was willing to stand up and face bullets so his men could advance.....

2) Mr. Rogers was a Navy Seal, had full tattoos on his arms covered by the famous sweater, he had 19 kills in Vietnam, then became a Presb. minister, a pacifist......

ALL BS - I'm emailing the radio station!

Mr. Rogers a Navy Seal? Hahahahahahaha LMAO! I loved watching Mr. Rogers and please don't take this as knocking him because I would never do that.....BUT...Mr. Roges as a Navy Seal has the makings of the worlds funniest movie ever!

I was born in 1969, and the kid's shows I remember watching were Seseme Street, Electric Company, Mr.Rogers, Mr.Dressup (Canadian Show), Friendly Giant, Big Blue Marble, and definitely Captain Kangaroo. I especially loved the pinball clip on Seseme Street where they played the funky 70s music and counted to 12. I was happy to see they still show that to this day!

I get to watch a whole new breed of kid's shows now with my son. He loves the Wiggles, Mighty Machines, Dora the Explorer, Max and Ruby, Caillou, Babar, Zooboomafoo, Seseme Street (esp Cookie Monster and Elmo), Blue's Clues, Berenstain Bears, Timothy Goes to School, and many more. Thankfully he's outgrown Teletubbies, whoever writes that show is smoking do-bees!

I loved watching Captain Kangaroo when I was a kid. The show had probably been on a couple of years before we got a tv then moved to a city that had a station broadcasting his show. For 5 years begore Captain Kangaroo he was Clarabel the clown on Howdy Doody.

The story with him & Lee Marvin is supposedly not true. If he was 28 when the show started then he was only 14 when WWII began.
I enjoyed Dancing Bear, the moose, & oh yeah, Tom Terrific cartoon with the bad guy, Crabby Appleton.
