can't decide on Schaeffer or Hydrotex

I been running the 7000 15-40 schaeffer for 3 oil changes now and 3000miles changes and the oil at 3k is just black as can be it's makeing me thing that schaeffer is not for me. I have the schaeffer oil in 3 trucks now all have had 3 oil chages in them a 2000 psd,1997psd,2004psd all of them make the oil black in 3000k any ideas? or should i chage to hydrotex?
 
Any diesel oil will turn black and soot looking very quickly. Most will do it in 500 miles of a change. It's a diesel's nature. Schaeffer's 15w40 is one of the best out there and while it may look black and bad at 3K miles, it's far from finished.
 
The color of oil has NOTHING to do with how good of an oil it is, OR how dirty it is. My recent oil analysis had 5500 miles on the oil (yes, it was pitch black), but under a microscope it was as clean or cleaner than new oil per Butler Labs. I run a bypass filter setup in addition to my full flow filter and my oil is black. By the way, Schaeffer's is a good oil!

My Schaeffers is currently on 7,000 miles, although not real black you can still see it is green, I have a bypass filter and the OA at 6,000 miles was excellent. I am shooting for 12,000 on this batch.

Black means it is doing its job and suspending your engines contaminents.
 
Stay with the Schaeffers,,its a better oil than Hydrotex though it is also good,,,, better than most common oils,,,,, the Lubrication Engineers make a really good oil for the Trucking industry,,,,,,BL
 
Don't change at 3000 miles unless you have a leaky injector causing fuel dilution in the oil or an antifreeze leak into the oil--which you probably have neither.

Just about every oil analysis report I've received on diesel lube black as night shows the oil good for continued service. Run that Schaeffer for at least 10,000 miles.

The black coloration is from sub-micron soot particles. These soot particles are so small that they cannot do any damage to the wear surfaces of the metal--sort of like a boulder going down the Grand Canyon. Most damage is caused by wear particles in the 3-8 micron range. Now soot can (in layman terms) gather together and make larger particles that are in the size range that can cause wear. But a good diesel oil has additives that keeps soot from gathering together. As long as these additives remain in good quantities in the oil- the oil will look black but remain in fine running shape for the engine. Also Lube Control is great in controlling diesel soot. Adding some LC to your oil regularly will boost your oil for longer drain intervals while maintaing excellent soot control.

Also soot production is not a function of oil, but a function of fuel and the burning of it and how well you particular engine keeps the soot in the air exhaust stream and not in the oil.
