Canola-based Motor Oils

I found out something interesting while reading about rapeseed oil. When trying to push rapeseed oil into the kitchen to be used as a "healthy" cooking oil, someone changed the name to canola, which literally came from "CANada's Oil". I never liked it as a cooking oil- hopefully it has a brighter future in the fuel/ lube oil market.

Yes, back when we were much lower on the petroleum learning curve, castor oil was a good alternative. Unlike canola, soy, corn, and most other vegetable oils, castor oil is a saturated oil and much less reactive with oxygen.

Castor oil can be used as a drying oil in paint, but only after being chemically modified to produce unsaturation, DCO.

The links are above. You can price it yourself. Have you priced synthetics, fuel overseas, or the price of a soldiers life??

Do we have to wait until oil/gasoline/diesel quadruples in price before alternatives are produced/tested/made available?

Noone if PUSHING vegetable motor oils down anyone's throat. These companies are just trying to give people a CHOICE.

I'm a supporter of capitalism and enjoy my freedom to choose. When more readily available(like at the parts store), I will switch.

Don't forget that the very popular and NOW more widely used/accepted synthetic oils went through a learning curve, and battled for their reputation. I was glad to be an early user of synthetics regardless of the negative hearsay.

427...

Very insightful question. They are grown in 3 places, all in Europe: the Mosel and Rhine river vallies in Germany, and along the shores of the Thunner See in Switzerland (the latter are far more expensive). They are varicolored when harvested, but only the green ones are selected to brew SLX.

On a serious note, and really and truly NOT trying to hijack this thread, with regard to the ongoing socio-economic-politico discussion in this thread, I was thinking: while I truly enjoy variety in the world and don't want everyone to think and act and dress alike, I do find myself wishing that, when it comes to the value and dignity of human life and to civility in personal and political relations, everyone would adopt the American point of view...and then I read that some guy in MY country hired some people to kill six human beings over the theft of an X-box.

pscholte, I don't know what felonists squatters killing 6 people for excersizing their legal right to remove articles left on their property has to do with the price of tea in China, but I pretty sure you could replace the Xbox with a goat and you have the same thing going on all over the world.

Also, having spent some time in European cities and having to keep my wallet next to the family jewels so that I could keep possesion of it, doesn't put a favorable light on their claimed great leaps in socio-political achievements either.

Finally, squating over a hole in the floor in an open room that the Saudis call a "public restroom"
while beheadings take place in the town square for thieves of food, doesn't give me the warm fuzzy I think you're looking for.

I'm not sure the point you are making relates directly to the point I was making but, come to think of it, I liked it better when we were just talking about harvesting gummi bears and making the Supreme Elixer of Friction Reducing Goodness, Engine Cleanliness, and Lubricitous Well-being along with Truth and Love and Felicity and all that other neat stuff.

Yes!! Yes !!

Much better to talk of our appreciation of the Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent, Golden Nectar of Greenness known to uplift mankind from the depths of lubrication despair.

Where are the moderators?

If you don't want to take a thread seriously, don't bother posting.

Yeah, it was hijacked.

Maybe they find it hard to take a thread seriously that starts out suggesting putting drying oils in your crankcase. Unsaturated vegetable oils are inherently unstable and polymerize when exposed to oxygen and heat. Keep them in the kitchen.

Which gives french fries their unique flavor and golden appearance.

The patent is interesting.

It describes a base oil, hydroxy oil and liquid wax and sources the liquid wax as "... waxes .... derived from jojoba, meadowfoam or lanolin".

The use of lanolin is interesting.

They also describe tests that "indicate the oil allows the engine to run up to 30% cooler than engines run on conventional petroleum based oils. Moreover, tests indicate that the vegetable based lubricant reduces engine wear by an estimated 10% to 20% over conventionally lubricated engines."

I'm skeptical of the vegetable oil promoter's claims for emissions reduction. They're claiming huge reductions in emissions, especially NOx and HC. Where do these reductions come from? That is, in 5,000 mi I burn 1 qt of oil and ~165 gallons of gasoline. Where does the 80% reduction in NOx and 40% reduction in HC come from if I switch to vegetable oil?
