Cannot stop the pinging...

I'm back with some info - the car is fitted with oxygen sensor eliminators! I think there are HGEOs afterall.
 
The 4.6L is known for "pinging". Often, it's due to insufficient EGR flow. That could be due to reasons other than clogged EGR passageways.

So, my money is on insufficient EGR flow.

Most people don't understand that EGR dilutes the oxygen in the combustion chamber and significantly reduces combustion chamber temperatures. So, the air/fuel ratio is calibrated for proper EGR flow, and would be somewhat incorrect without proper EGR flow. But, more importantly, the ignition timing can be significantly advanced with the proper implementation of EGR.

When EGR flow is reduced, pinging occurs due mostly to the advanced timing.

Thanks for the info! Any idea what could be the cause of insufficient EGR flow?

Ya he has no cat monitors. Ford's do not have oxygen sensors after the cats, they have cat monitors.

They ARE O2 sensors. Often the same as the front, with no heater and a different harness.

In the aftermarket yes, but according to Ford they are cat monitors not O2 sensors.

Mmm, no. I suppose it might be possible if we were talking about an SR-71.

Check your inputs, its in inHG on that chart. Just for an example, I pulled up Kuwait City on weather.com and it shows a pressure of 29.5 inches of mercury. Baro readout from the computer should be reasonably close to that.
If you end up finding weather with pressure in kPa, the chart has a rough conversion, as well.

According to this, it's currently 998 hectopascals (~29.47 inHg). I reckon the reading should be about 4.3 according to the chart in the link.

The big question is, how do I go about correcting this?

Actually, its worse than that since it should be reading inHG directly. That is why I said to double check the XGAUGE inputs. It probably wont be exact due to a variety of factors.
 
Thats pretty far off. Its saying you are at around 3500 ft. Reading low is a telltale of a skewed MAF.

I checked my car and Its telling me 29.2 with local weather readout of 29.8. Though mine is reading from the MAP function of the ESM present on 03+. That makes this trick not usable on 03+ but on older cars it works just fine.
 
So I decided to sort this out with a custom SCT tune, and install my brand new (not rebuilt) Marauder MAF that's been sitting on the shelf. The tune will cover the following:

- 25.6 lb/hr fuel injectors
- 80 mm Marauder MAF
- 180 F thermostat
- Fan comes on at 192 F
- One heat range colder plugs
- 20% coolant (John Deere CoolGard-II) to 80% distilled water with Water Wetter

Also replacing all 8 COPs. I want to see it detonate after all this!

To be honest, I reckon the 180 F thermostat and 22C (one range colder) plugs are really the way to go in our climate. The ambient temperatures are extremely high, and cylinder head temperatures are probably elevated with the stock 32 C plugs. The heat this engine's putting up with is pretty much what you get in Death Valley.

I didn't remove anything. The vehicle was produced during a period where most of the Persian Gulf was still using leaded fuel. Obviously catalytic converters and lead do not go hand in hand, so Ford produced the vehicle without catalytic converters and oxygen sensors, making the MAF solely responsible for controlling the air/fuel ratio.
 
If you wanted, you could probably put in O2 sensors, letting it run in closed loop instead of open loop. However, I doubt that would do more than help mpg a little.

Exactly. I was leaning towards EGR and clogged injectors, but since he changed those they should be ok.

Check fuel pressure too under load.
