News is breaking that a 40-year old Canadian navy officer has been charged with passing sensitive information to the Russians:

Now, I grew up in the early 1980's and I remember the threat of the 'big bad Russians'. Most people say that is old hat, and with the fall of communism, the cold war is over, and the russians are our friends...etc...

I've always said 'baloney' to that - the russians have never been our 'friends', and with the resource battle brewing in the North, they are now more of a threat than ever, considering they are still nuclear armed to the teeth.

Looks like my view has been vindicated a bit. Maybe we should dust off those bunkers, next. Cold war never went away...people just wanted to think it did.

Oh yeah. They are gearing up to claim the north even though it's proven to be a Canadian shelf. And the sad part is that we are going to need American artillery to keep them at bay.
The killing never ends, whether it's religion, energy,a different way of thinking. War never ends, only the battleground changes

Exactly....they are 'playing nice' right now.

When they are really challenged on having full rights to the north, things will get really nasty, really fast.

The Russians just don't 'want' to develop that resource right now...they are just waiting.

Watch.

Russia isn't going to test Canada like that. They don't want to tussle with the US and Canada, we would kick their rears. It is a changing time and energy is going to be the commodity of dangerously high value in the coming years.

I agree energy is already a pricey commodity. But you cant overlook info as being pricey as well. These days info can be bought and sold for a pretty penny. You cant blame a guy for trying to get his if you catch my drift. I didnt read the article but i sure would back up our friends in the south if it came down to it.

Im not a big go to war guy but I would do whatever it took if someone started something with the north america's and my family and fellow people were in harms way. I have mixed feelings about the afgan thing and I do think that war was an american thing so I did not involve myself with that except for my usual military donations which were also before and after so i did contribute.

I also dont have all the facts just like 99.999% of the world about that conflict but if the afgan thing was brought to us that would be a different story.

I guess you could say I dont agree with all decisions the americans make but with that being said I dont agree with all of the decisions that are made in my own land. I do know I stand beside my neighbors and always will.

Don't think that since the cold war is over, and the USSR has disbanded, that the russians wouldn't grab the first opportunity to regain what they once had, and more. They would do it in a heartbeat, and (unlike the US) with absolute cruelty.

My point exactly.

I think you fellas are overreacting. The Russians assured us YEARS ago that they are painting doves on all of their bombs and tanks. John--Las Vegas

I do wonder how it would play out if Russia just starting putting up an oil rig in an area of contention? I think we would rely almost totally on the U.S. flexing some muscle to encourage them leaving. In reality neither country needs go to war for resources but greed is pretty powerful!

I'd not think Russia would just give up the ambition of trying to be a regional if not world super power. Whether they will do it nicely or not is the question here.

At the moment they couldn't afford it like they used to, but if they go Chinese on it (cheap, focused weapon targeting our expensive equipment, and use enough cheap stuff till we ran out of ammos and ships), they can cause a lot of damage.

Let's hope they decide it is not worth the trouble.

And then the Russians sell the technology and secrets to their commie china friends and every where else. Nothings changed. Russia and china are still the enemies they've always been. The only difference is now the US is naively allowing its enemies inside its circle of "friends", giving away its markets etc.

Have you forgotten the gulf war already. All that was about was oil. History is going to repeat itself.
And as a Canadian and aware of our technology the Russians may put up a fight but as soon as an American aircraft carrier heads on up the Russians will get the picture.
But the Russians with chinas backing is ww3
