To much generalization here. One "Wix" might have a thick can an another might not. One MC might be "thick" and another not. There is no particular advantage to a thick can anyway, unless you need it for some reason... a race engine that develops super high pressure at 10K rpm (or more), an engine that might need protection from can damage, etc. Otherwise, the mfr. of the brand names usually specs a burst strength way higher than needed. When touring the Fram test facility, I saw ordinary orange Frams under test at 200-300 psi. The base gasket always gave way before the can. Beyond that, the crimp would be more likely to let loose long before the can will.
Beyond sume super-el-cheapo-no-name-low-rent filter, there isn't much to worry about and doing so is much ado over nothing. Unless you have a known need.
