I called Mr. Lube and it appears that they fill all Honda Civics of this age with regular Dexron III ATF. Service manual says to use ONLY Honda ATF (Z-1). Is this nonsense in the manual?

How could such a big chain like Mr. Lube risk it if it was dangerous.

I have worked at many repair shops where the AT gets filled with DEXIII and then and additive like: http://www.lubegard.com/~/C-177/LUBEGARD+Highly+Friction+Modified+ATF+Supplement

And the shifts feel the same as Z1 ATF.

They flush it with Dexron 3 and add RunRite (Lubeguard) additive. Works the same. You can request Honda ATFZ1. They are all required to carry it.

Honda states that Dex III can be used in emergencies but at the expense of shift feel. I'd stick to Z1 during the powertrain warranty issue though.
