API, ASTM, SAE - there all elastomer tests.

Shaft seals integrate a spring. You would need to understand the relationship of this spring pressure relative to the elastomer and the anticipated maximum shaft runout of that particular seal.

ie its impossible to determine as a general statement for shaft seals, since each is different and 1984 shaft seals were not designed with anything in mind other than conventional oil. It may, Or it may not.

Okay. Hopefully that High Mileage oil won't affect the spring rate or shaft runout.

API and SAE don't have tests. It's always a standardized test, mostly ASTM but some ISO. The SAE and the API are an aggregator of those tests.

I have found that conventional and blend oils seem to seep less. Maybe try maxlife blend? Even the conventional oils in 2026 are much better than any of the oils commonly used in 1986.

Mine is leaking at the balancer , does that matter?

That is easier to replace than the rear main.
