can oil filter cause startup knock? Hurricane??

Anything about the design of a 99 Maxima or its oil filter that would cause a knock at startup - like really infrequently. My 99 at 3000 miles on a 30 degree morning after a two day sit, knocked (sounded like valve tap) for about 30 seconds - thats really a long time. Had a nissan filter on it. changed it - no more knock.

did it again today at 51000 miles - 2 day sit 60 degree weather (hurricane had gone thru - low pressure?) had a 1 week old Pure one filter on it. It has not done it before after sitting 2 weeks.

what gives with this type knock - anyone else had same prob?

I have a 99 Max and it sits for days without being started. I havent had a problem with mine tapping. I am running 10w30 Castrol Syntec Blend in mine. I have a Fram filter on it right now, I have used Nissan filters in the past...No issues

The antidrainback valve is often the culprit with tapping at start-up until the lifters are filled. I'd suggest experimenting with different brands of filters until you hopefully find one that eliminates the problem. Silicone ADBVs (orange color) are typically superior to nitrile (black), but any ADBV, regardless of construction, can potentially be problematic for a given application. You've already tried Nissan and Purolator filters -- you might want to try a Wix/Napa Gold or Champion (AC, STP, Mobil 1, K&N, etc.) next time and see what happens. Or Baldwin or Hastings if available. I wouldn't worry about changing out your current filter early unless the problem becomes consistent or irritating.

Sounds like a lifter tick. An adbv valve that isn't perfect can allow some draining that can can contribute to that happening, but a lifter can drain out by itself too (If failed adbv was the cause then they would ALL be dry at startup).
If it is only every now and then and doesn't last too long it is not worth worrying about. If it started ticking for a longer time then it would sound more like something was clogging up and preventing flow...then you would want to deal with it more aggressively.
Just do like my wife and leave the radio on real loud when you shut the car off, that way when the engine starts you take a few seconds to cover your ears and then you turn the volume down...if it is still ticking you can consider it a bigger issue

I always thought that Nissans valvetrains were noisier than other cars(like honda/toyota). I've also seen mild sludge buildup in Nissans caused by cheap oils or infrequent maintenance. Please say that you are using synthetics or practicing an aggressive mineral oil change interval.

Definitely play "musical oil filters" until you find one that your ears are happy with.

I find that my Nissan likes the cheaper Purolater filter better than the pureone.

What oil are you using? mileage change interval?
what oil filter part numbers are you using?

"Sounds like a lifter tick." Good point, a possibility. While I'd never use it on a routine basis, I know from personal experience that a treatment with Marvel Mystery Oil can be quite effective in clearing out gummed lifters, if that might be an issue here.

I think they are the Pure one #14610 ? whatever the book says.
I change oil about every 3500 miles every 4 months
