If there's any risk of engine damage I'll just toss it and loose the 10$ no biggie, but if its fine I'll change it out for the oem after 3k miles.

If you're still under warranty and the STP catalog doesn't say it fits, I would not. Sucks to lose $10, but if something goes wrong, I promise you it will cost you a whole lot more than $10......

Good Morning Papang,
I recommend you not use the STP filter for two reasons, size and fitment. Using the Fram site I got the dimensions of your STP filter, Fram equivalent FE6607, and the correct one for your vehicle FE7317.

1. The 7317 is 3.39" tall and the STP is 2.73", .66" shorter which is a lot.
2. The base gasket thickness. The 7317 is .281" and the STP is .203", .078" thinner. My concern is the STP will bottom out on the aluminum filter pad of your Subaru.

I'd purchase the correct filter specified for your 2020 Impreza.

Using Fram as an example for Subaru applications a poor one, imo. Unlike many other filter manufactures, including but not limited to Wix, Purolator even topic AZ STP, Fram makes no distinction for Subaru vehicles and/or higher bypass psi. They rec their standard 7317 series used on many vehicles besides Suby. While you would be covered with a filter warranty on the Fram with 7317, not so with the other filter makers mentioned. AZ STP (no XL option) like the others, has a separate Subaru application. That being the case, the STPXL for the Impreza would have no filter warranty, if something happened no coverage. So as noted here, best not to run the STP 6607XL.

All that said, when it comes to other vehicles the shorty 6607 and .75" longer 7317 generally speaking interchangeable. In fact, many quick lubes and low tier filter lines consolidate to the shorty. No saying that's my preference, just what's done. If it was just a matter of subbing the STPXL 6607, for a 7317 application, especially on out of vehicle warranty I'd see no major issue.
