Can I use Mobil 1 syn in new 2009 Hyundai Sonata?

Wife has an 06' Accent GLS, fully loaded. She loves it. We run whatever is on sale with a genuine Hyundai filter. Last OCI was Castrol GTX, this one is Valvoline Synpower from a BOGO last year.
The biggest thing on the Hyundai's is not so much the oil used, but the filter. Using anything other then OEM will, and does cause a valvetrain tick. There is even a TSB from hyundai on this. BTW the Hyundai filters are of excellent quality.

10,000 mile OCI has worked well for me for the last 31 years with M1 oils. Many high mileage engines.

I think it depends on the formulation. For extended drain intervals (which personally I categorize as anything over 7500-8000 miles), I'd go with a full-syn or syn blend rated for long drain intervals. That means it has superior base oil and a strong additive pack that won't deplete before the drain.

If you are looking for such an oil, take a look at German Castrol (0W30 European Formula made in Germany, aka GC), Mobil-1 0W40 European Formula. These are supposedly full synthetic (Group IV) and both of these are approved for BMW's 15,000 mile drain interval. There are of course others. Check your manual to see what's spec'ed for longer drains (if anything).

And... I'd always change the oil annually - regardless of miles on the oil. If you are really interested to see how long you can go, pick your oil and run it 7500. Send some drain oil off for UOA and see how well it is holding up. If you drive frequent short trips (couple of miles), you'll be real hard on the oil and it may not go very long. Only analysis will tell you whats really going on.

Good luck.

If you read the back of the Mobil 1 bottle it states that Mobil 1 provides excellent protection for all makes of vehicle EXCEPT Hyundai Sonata 4 bangers...Im going to guess it is because Hyundai's are made on Korea

Excluding WIX and Amsoil EAO's. Both of these work just fine in Kia/Hyundai applications.

I have one of those fussy engines which has the lifter-ticking with any other filter other than the WIX/EAO/OEM!

While I agree it is possible, I would do a UOA after 8K miles on a syn to make sure it can handle it in the OP's application/driving style.

I would use a Grp-III syn like Pennzoil Platinum in the winter for better cold flow properties, and use a Dino oil in the warmer weather.
NO. Use Syn all year 'round. Syns not only offer better flow in the cold but stand up to the heat better as well. So...why give up the better protection in the summer??

Because he is in PA, and doesn't drive a high performance car. Dino would be more than fine IMO. Texas, or the middle east, sure, but not in PA.

I just bought one too and have been trying to figure out what oil to use. What makes you think it came with valvoline???? It says in the book that they suggest quakerstate 5w20 or 5w30 or in hot areas 10w30. I wish I knew if it came from the factory with 5w20 or some other wt because I agree the engine sounds great just as it is and Im getting 30mpg mixed city and hwy with about 500 miles on it so it will probably go up from there once its broken in!

You're right. I have to find out what it came with. The salesman I bought the car from said it came with Valvoline, and then I saw that the dealer pushes Valvoline in their service department, so I threw that answer out the window. Maybe it is Quaker State??? I'm wondering where to find this out . . . ???
