What if i use conventional like pyb?

Why other car brand dont require synthetic, like honda and toyota?
What makes GM engines so particular? Anything better than Japanese or euro engines?

I dont like the fact that cant put the oil I want in MY car that cost $$$ and see other car brand use good old dino.

You can use whatever you like if your warranty is up or don't mind the warranty complications

Why is that such a problem?

Realistically, how much per year would you be saving running PYB vs some Dexos1 oil?

European engines have even stricter oil requirements! Turbocharging, DI and extended OCI intervals have really required manufacturers to strengthen the quality of oil specifications.

Your 1.8 is pretty easy on oil and you could probably easily get away with PYB, but move up to the 1.4T and the results probably wouldn't be pretty unless you kept to a really short OCI.

Personally I like the spec.

11.99$ for a 5L PYB, i change it myself, dealer = 56$+tax with i dont know what dexos no name brand, acdelco made by god knows, and its changed by Joe Blow at the dealer, no thanks.

You can buy Pennzoil Sythetic Blend that is Dexos1 approved at the store. Wal-mart has it, it's about the same price as PYB.

Out here, a 5qt jug of Dexos1 approved Quaker State is about $17. Not sure what it is in Canada. Still, I wouldn't mind paying a little more for higher quality oil that can potentially be used over a longer OCI.

+1

Get the Pennzoil synthetic blend. Done.

+1 on using either Pennzoil or Quaker State Dexos blend. Cheap and readily available at any Wal-Mart. If your car has DI and/or a turbo, the Dexos spec should be met.

Yeah, Wolf's Head 30 weight never let me down!

I got some Peak that met dexos for $3.50/qt, full syn.

Why does GM require Dexos? Does it benefit the car in some way? If it does why would you use an oil that isn't supported by your car. Some Toyota's take transmission fluid in place of power steering fluid. That's kinda like saying "WHY do I have to use transmission fluid? I wanna use power steering fluid"

As others have pointed out, European brands are even more particular. And Honda, Toyota and other Japanese makers require 0w20 which demands at least a synthetic blend: probably a more expensive synthetic blend than Dexos1 requirs anyway. Don't fight it - the extra cost is inconsequential and failing to follow recommendations could jeopardize your warranty.

The manufacturer's don't pull specs out of the sky. I would heed their recommendations, even if it means spending a little more per OCI.

Why worry about saving $5-$7 per 6k-7500k miles. If you like Pennzoil use platinum as it meets the specs.

I don't understand why people spend over 20k on a new car and are worried about saving $5 on an oil change

Realistically, I highly doubt it would matter much with most GM vehicles, assuming one were cautious about the OCI, rather than relying on the OLM, which is based upon using dexos1 oil.

I have a Cruze with the turbo 1.4 so I stick with synthetic.
If I had the 1.8 non-turbo I wouldn't hesitate to use PYB even though it isn't dexos1 approved.
The 1.8 has a timing belt and shouldn't be too hard on it's oil....and PYB is a fine oil.

I don't see the point in using an out of spec oil just to save a couple bucks an oil change.

Also the notion the OP seems to have that he has to go to the dealer to get a Dexos oil change is false. There are plenty of competitively priced dexos oils on the market and you can certainly do the oil changes yourself. If you're really worried about it keep the recipts from the oil/filter purchase.
