i'm in the same boat and 2nd the recomd for Pennzoil or GM synchromesh. i ran Redline D4, Valvoline ATF, Shell ATF, and finally MaxLife dex/merc since i couldn't find the synchromesh in hawaii. i have to say the maxlife feels the best

I think Whitewolf is saying that those transmissions and power steering systems that specify DexIII must be junked as soon as the current service interval for the fluid ends. See, DexIII has ceased to exist... and in Whitewolf's opinion, one should NEVER pour in any fluid that is not reccommended by the manufacturer. So if the reccommended fluid is DexIII (which no longer exists, I'm told), then you just gotta junk the car.

Unless, of course, you can drain some DexIII out of a junkyard transmission (after tracking down the previous owner and verifying under threat of bodily harm that he did in fact put ONLY DexIII in said transmission). Assuming the fluid in that particular vehicle is not at the end of its service life... you'll need that vehicle's maintenance records.

I'd suggest that savvy BITOG car owners immediately begin petitioning all the OEM's for updated specifications... so that you may continue to drive your vehicles. Else you'll have to upgrade to vehicles that specify currently licensed fluids.

every oil company must test their ATF in every transmission produced since 1950, for 30,000 miles.

or else you have to buy ATF from the dealer

GM Manual Trans. & T-case Fluid P/N is 88861800. It's not a Synth. fluid and is similar to the former Dex III also (IIRC) if that matters.

The Getrag F23's like in both our '03's is just notchy by nature IMO, especally on cold 1-2 shifts. They have become better but internal upgrades around '05(?) likely play more of a role than the fluid spec. changing.

My VUE did smooth out quite a bit on the M1. I have been contemplating RP Synchromax for it's next change but may leave well enough alone and just use the M1 again, though my Olds Achieva w/ an Isuzu trans. has always been less notchy (albeit sloppier) on the Synchromesh type fluid it calls for.

Whitewolf- I know where you're coming from, and I agree that you have a legitimate point regarding the lack of control over how unlicensed fluids are formulated. But I'm sure you realize that the specs for quite a few non-GM vehicles have never been updated- they still call for DexronII/III. As you've repeatedly pointed out- nobody, by definition, currently makes a licensed DexIII. And neither DexVI nor MerconV have been approved for use in these vehicles. So the only way that these owners can follow your advice is to junk their vehicles...

Or they could simply ignore your advice and use one of those unlicensed fluids. It DOES seem like a simpler option.
