Can Blackstone verify if a fluid meets a certain spec? Like if I take a sample of my transmission fluid can they determine if it's Mecron LV vs Mecron V etc.?

Depends what the difference in the fluid is. have you looked at the spec sheet for both to see what the requirements are of the fluids?

For example Dex VI is thinner than Dex3 so if you had to virgin samples it should be easy to tell. Dex3 sheers down after usage so if both had a lot of miles on them then you would need to see if they had different additives.

I would think Polaris might be able. But basically they would look at the mix of additives and conclude what ATF it PROBABLY was.

But as the viscosity changes and depletion of additives, it gets harder. (If its not a VOA).

You should probably ask that question directly to Blackstone then. If it's something easy like "viscosity for LV has to be X" but "viscosity for V has to by Y", then you can easily tell from a UOA. Same thing if it has to do with particular level of additives.

But if it's performance related, then Blackstone will most likely not be able to tell you anything. Just like they wouldn't be able to tell you if an oil meets MB 229.5 vs MB 229.3 spec.

You basically need to know what testing goes into these Mercon specifications and then ask Blackstone if they can replicate them.

What I meant was "How is a Mercon V/LV rating obtained?" Is it based on some amount of wear or deposits that take place over many hours of testing? If so, I doubt Blackstone can replicate it, but you should ask.

If it's just based on additive level, then that's a lot easier to verify.

I was thinking the same thing. If it bothers you, just change it. It'll be quicker, and possibly cheaper too.

I'm trying to determine if a shop I had do a transmission flush used the wrong fluid.

Some years ago I made the mistake of letting an Indy shop do a transmission fluid and filter change on my Caravan. When I inquired beforehand about what fluid they would use, the manager showed me a green bottle of Quaker State ATF+4. When I took it back there for the change, the technician poured fluid from a black bottle (my first red flag).

Within a few days the transmission started running bad and I suspected maybe the wrong fluid. I sent a sample to Blackstone. They could not confirm what kind of fluid was in there, but they could confirm that it had attributes not consistent with ATF+4. I went back to the shop and they denied any wrong doing until I showed them the lab results. They did a full fluid exchange with the correct fluid and the problem went away.

Contact Blackstone with your question.
