Can a sludged engine run perfectly fine?

Just adopt a better maintenance interval, keep the oil topped off, and keep driving.

A pint of Rislone or Marvel at every OCI will help clean it up.

If its the 350, I doubt even sludge can make it croak. My friends Tow-Truck buddy has a late 80's Chevy 350 tow truck and it busted a head gasket while towing a car from PA. Truck didn't even flinch one bit.

But if you wanted to clean it there are a few options, some recommend ARx(never used it), I used MMO in my Xterra and it worked for me(bit cleaner inside), using a heavy detergent oil(Pennzoil YB/PP or your choice of oil). Or GUMout/Regane?

Sludged engines seem to run hotter than normal.
But sure, many run just fine in light duty.
Don't expect maximum power, efficiency, or life from them, though.

I bought a 89 camaro with 109k miles on it that was sludged up badly. I used regular Pennzoil 5-30 and sold it with 210k nmiles on it, Still ran perfect, I knew better than to try and clean it up.

I have a 92 GMC 1500 half ton. I've only looked through the oil fill hole and it is horrible. All I can see is black.

Now mind you, I was not the origanal owner.. And any of us Bitogers know, this engine would be spotless had I owned it first. But yet, this engine runs perfect. smooth at idle, and I've been changing the oil every 3 months even though I only put 1500 miles on it in that time.
1992? I assume high miles? At this point keep on keepin' on. I also assume this things doesn't owe you anything. If it starts making noise , turn up the volume of your favorite rock or country station.
