I would pick Ingersol Rand,They take a licking and keep on ticking .They outlast my Snapon impact 3 to 1, when I worked the air compressor on my van put out 175 psi and I would be able to hammer off lugnuts on a semi with my half inch impact guns and I broke the anvil on my Snapon 3 times and the ingersol rand just kept on working with the same abuse.

I have not been impressed with CH air tools.

I see entry level mechanics buy a pack of CH air tools, and the gun might last 3 months.

But IR tools are amazingly tough and priced well.

the CH tools aren't bad, for lightweight type of work.
I made the mistake of buying a CH air gun, it sounded strong, but was barely able to remove 90ft/lb lug nuts off of a truck. It had more power going forward vs. backwards.
I sold it on ebay, a guy bought it and wanted me to buy it back from him because it wouldn't remove lugnuts off of his 4x4 suburban. Fortunately.. he won the auction and I didn't lie at all, I stated the p/n of the CH gun. Not my fault that nobody researched the number on their own! Phew!
Went out and got a craftsman Pro, this thing has a lot of boom to it! I think the craftsman's are made by IR??

I also got a CH 3/8" ratchet.. I have to admit... It's got some good oomph to it. Got it at AZ (same place as gun).
I still have the air ratchet, it's not great, but good enough for what I've thrown at it. I'm pretty satisfied with it.

Here is a short story, but unfortionally i dont know part numbers. About 4 years ago my dad bought me a 1/2 in impact wrench made by ingersoll rand, it was about 130 dollars. Last year my buddy and i got back from an ATV trip and he tore a CV boot and needed to remove his axle. He has CH 1/2 impact, not sure what the cost was. It would not remove this nut. He cranked the air pressure up too about 120 and it still would not remove this nut. He borrowed mine the next day and at 90 psi, it took the nut off. Not sure what the difference is but there seems to be one. I use mine quite a bit because i own three chevy trucks and it seems like between them i am always working on them. I have yet to have a nut that it would not remove. If it ever breaks, i would not even consider buying a cheap one because i use it pretty heavy. I can image that if you were just doing lug nuts or somehting that the CH would work fine.

Story number two (abusing my IR)

My front pinion seal went out on my suburban and i could not get that pinion nut off for nothing. Finally against the advice of not using an impact, i set my air pressue to 90 psi and let it beat on the nut for about 5 seconds, it would not remove the nut. I heated it up a little and tried again with no luck. By this time i was irritated and figured heck with it, its comming off or im breaking somehthing. I cranked my air pressure up to 150 and set the regulator around 135 psi. In about 2 seconds it buzzed it right off. It says do not exceed 90 psi so i can vouch for the fact that they are pretty tough.

The cheaper air tools are fine for most jobs. Rotating tires,U-Bolts, stuff like that. I have a few here at home but I'm always getting into a bind and I find myself driving to work to get my IR or Mac guns to do what the cheap guns won't do.

I reciently bought a hF copy of an IR231 and am curious as to how well it works. Have not used it yet.

The IR guns are not that expensive. Definatly not out of most peoples price range when you consider the quality.

The only CH air tool I have is a 16 ga. brad nailer. It has not given me the first problem. I don't think I would want a CH gun. The torque ratings I've seen on them is very low. That's the problem with these cheapo guns. It might me 1/2, but if it has a 225 ft. lb rating, it ain't gonna do squat! I personally have an IR 231C that I love. Not to hijack the thread, but if you are looking for an econimical gun, go with the Harbor Freight Earthquake. I havn't heard the first bad thing about them.

i have the cheapo CH 3/8" air ratchet and it works quite well for the ~30-40 dollar price i paid for it 7 or 8 years ago. it still works quite well. never had it apart and is still quite strong.

also i have the CH 1/4" "extreme" duty air ratchet that also is still working quite well. its fast and powerful. its a little weaker than it was originally but still does the job.

for the price the air ratchets work very well. i use them at work all the time.

the impact guns are a different story....if you buy the cheap ones they suck [censored]. if you spend the money on their "extreme" series they work pretty good but if you are going to spend that much on a gun you may as well get a IR gun.

I have some of their older stuff that is pretty good but evidently the company is not what it used to be. I needed a part for a small compressor, got on their website and found who it said was their local service rep. Went there and mentioned that I needed a part for a CH compressor and this guy went on a rant! He started wailing about he hasn't sold their junk for four years, how his attorney has sent letters to CH demanding that his business be removed from the website and that if i wanted parts, I'd have to go to Chillicothe and spend $25 (company evidently has minimum order.) I just went to Home Depot and got what I needed.

CH is ok for air ratchets, cutoff wheels, and air chisels.
There guns are junk. I know I have one. I had it for 2 weeks, and it didn't have enough power to do tire rotations. So I bought the biggest 1/2" gun I could buy at the time. The IR Titanium 2135Ti, and never looked back. 700 Ft/LBS of torque in reverse. 'Nuf said.
It only weighs 4 pounds, and the composite body absorbs most of the shock, So it won't hurt your wrists. It's expensive ($300), but if you treat it well, it will last you a lifetime.
