Nick - I imagine that you are relatively young, and that your adrenal glands are working as they should. Be happy! You have not yet hammered them into useless little vestigal organs from heavy coffee drinking!
But caffeine can be useful.
Actually, it has been shown that when taking tests, is is a benefit to have some caffeine first. It is a stimulant, and tea or coffee will generally help.

I'm a mid-twentysomething. Coffee is great. I've been trying to swear it off unless necessary, though.

Red Bull and copycats are my preferred energy drink/pick-me-up when on the road needing to get somewhere fast. They do their thing, and leave me feeling great for 5-6 hours. After that I'm back to feeling as tired as before.

Problem with Caffeine is that it takes a beating on your adrenal glands which can be depleted if overdone and cause an adrenal crisis which can be fatal.

I hate to keep harping about 5 Hour energy but at least they do it with Vitamins and Amino acids and very little caffeine. It's way easier on your system and doesn't leave you with the "after" effects that drinking caffeinated beverages does.

Doesn't 5 Hour Energy have the caffeine of a cup of coffee? Not to mention it tastes disgusting and doesn't seem to work as well as a normal energy drink for me.

It doesn't work for everyone as we all have different things making us tired and have different chemistry, it does have some caffeine in it but nowhere near the levels of other energy drinks. It uses mainly the vitamins/amino-acids to give you the energy you need with some subtle caffeine as a bonus instead of all caffeine & sugar.
