good afternoon! thanks for all the super help!

my 2008 Cadillac DTS has around 30,000 miles on the original brakes. i can go to a friend or a garage for new brakes.
in plain English, what is the difference in quality among various brakes? do i want the original type brakes? what is that, by the way!
i am willing to pay for the best, this is a safety feature.

i welcome any ideas.

Brakes are not hard, and friend could probably do the job. There is a huge difference not only in quality but in performance of brake pads. Obviously there is a tradeoff between performance and longevity, performance and noise... etc. If you like the OEM pads the only downfall would be price.

Unfortunately I'm not a DTS owner, so I can't recommend specific brands.

my friend is a certified mechanic, and i trust him! i want to understand the differences in pads and rotors. i don't know what the OEM pads are, but they WORK!!!! quiet and strong. can you recommend one or two makers of GREAT brake pads and rotors?

Since you like OEM pads and rotors because they perform well for 30k miles, I would first check the condition of the brake system to see if you need to do the brake now or it still have life left. While you have the wheels off to check the brake pads/rotors I would do brake flush if it was never done.

Many newer brake pads and rotors lasted 60-70k miles or more, if the pads thickness is still around half the original I wouldn't change it now.

Tirerack.com does a good job of rating/testing each brake pad. Just put in your make/model and you can see the pros and cons of each brake pad.

If you are satisfied with the OEM braking and lack of brake dust then stick with OEM. I also agree that TireRack is a good place to start if you don't like OEM pads.

do I automatically replace the rotors, too?

The rotors must be checked with measuring tools for runout and thickness. The thickness spec is stamped right on them.

You'd love NAPA adaptive one pads on this car. I'd bet the high end bendix or wagner formulas would be wonderful, too. Just don't let he mechanic put cheapos on.
