Cadillac Catera Electronic Throttle Control System

I have a 99' Cadillac Catera Sport. The engine revs up and down and up and down when idle. After ENDLESS hours of GOOGLE....I came across this site. Many others have said its the TPS or IAC, well from everything under MY hood, this car does not appear to have those. So, I am guessing that it has the Electronic Throttle Control system??? Never really heard of that....and cant find ANYTHING on google. Looking at what appears to be the throttle body there is a black rectangle box connected to it. What is this? Is it the electronic throttle control that I hear about? Or would this even be the issue. Plus, only started doing this in colder weather.
 
I will double check tomorrow but i believe this Opel Omega 3.0 engine uses both IAC and TPS.It sounds like a bad TPS.
The electronic throttle control if it has one is working fine or it would default to 15% limp home mode at any sign of a problem with the system.
 
Well I got a TPS from the local auto store and cannot find where it is. Was told it would be on the side of the throttle body......well on the side of mine is some big black rectangle box about 2 times that of the TPS I bought. Sorry to sound so dumb but I usually cant work about ANY mustang. But isnt the throttle body on these Cadillacs, where the two intake tubes are coming it? See, I got NO cable for any type of throttle.....at least that I can find.....and I been Staring for hours....

+1 to that. E-throttles are usually not too tolerant to any malfuction and will default to hi idle. I was under the impression all E-throttles do their own idle air control, eliminating the need for an IAC valve. I know the 5 i've owned (Chevys, Isuzu, Honda, Hyundai) had no IAC. Are any OBDII codes set on this Caddy?

I'm putting my money on something else since it has only happened at the onset of colder weather. Also, wouldn't a TPS fault trip a code? Vaccuum leak perhaps?
 
Apparently GM used a IAC on some models until 2003 when the throttle blade was used exclusively to control idle.I have an 02 Denali 6.0 here with E throttle that is using an IAC,it seems the E throttle remains static until pedal input is received and uses an IAC for idle control. Like you i also thought E throttle eliminated the IAC until i see some on early GM versions,AFAIK Ford and Chrysler do not in any year.

These Caddys are a Geman Opel Omega,i know some German units used a Integral Air Fuel Module (IAFM) and some used individual components.The ones badged Cadillac used individual but who knows what games GM got up to with the option upgrades and U.S. engine management.
The large box suggest it may be using an IAFM.Please post a picture so we can identify.E throttles i believe use 2 TPS switches.

A vacuum leak large enough to create an erratic idle would probably upset the fuel trim enough to set a code,but who knows anything and everything is possible with early Gen II modern engine management systems.

You may want to check the part you bought against the one you took out,it maybe different than the 99.
Edit It looks like its underneath in the front.

this was a common problem with s60, s80 volvos in early 2000's. dealer eventually sent out a recall if I'm not mistaken. It was the electronic throttle body assy. later workarounds included a GOOD CLEANING.

AFAIK Volvo in 2000 was already using the Ford system that is quite different to this type of system. Never a bad idea to clean the throttle body though.
 
First is to clean the throttle body bores and plates manually.
Use solvent and a lint free rag, and whatever probe/screwdriver/finger you need.
Get the plats [both sides] and the bores really clean.
If this does not fix it, try the same by removing the idle air motor. Be careful with strong solvents here.
A TPS or other problem would probably have thrown a code.
Perform this cleaning anyway. Everything will work better, and is a great base to start with.
 
Don't move the throttle plate by hand. Use ignition and gas pedal to move it. Otherwise you will be sorry.
 
K Trav, you if we are looking at pic1 are meaning next to the black oval thing connected to the intake tubes? Or do you mean on down.....next to the MAF? Sorry to sound so dumb......this german motor has got me.

And yes, I already took everything apart and tried cleaning as best I could.
