How long was this filter sitting in the storeroom?

Going to service my dad's 1987 Saab 9000 turbo next weekend (oil change and replace the air filter). I needed some other stuff so I put in an order to Rock Auto. Looks like this filter has been sitting for quite a long time on the shelf- date shows 1999 on the box, which is quite faded, and I've never heard of Crosland before (it's the correct filter I believe). My coworkers and I had a good laugh when I showed them this.

...the feel good moment of the day. Is the seal still pliable?

A guy near me was selling a 9000 (close to an '87, if not exactly) with 345,000 miles on it.
He wanted very healthy money for it and I declined.
The filter itself seems great, nothing about it concerns me. His car probably now has 157,000 miles on it and fairly decent for a 38 year old daily driver (he doesn't drive it much- maybe 1000 miles a year).

Personally, I would be hesitant to use it, if it was my vehicle. I don't know if these things get brittle or not, but I wouldn't want to take the risk of pieces of media falling off and then not just getting into the engine (a minimal concern IMO) but letting dirt through (a major concern IMO).

As long as the seal is pliable and the paper is not brittle or odd feeling, I would def still use it. Just make a point to check on it in a few months. Give it a pinch to see if the paper material breaks up or feels weird.

I had an air filter in my 2004 tahoe look totally fine, but would crumble/ break up when pinched. I think it the moisture in the air got to it after a while, that truck went through a 6 to 8 year period of minimal use by prior owner.
