The Chevron El Segundo oil refinery caught fire yesterday. This going to jack up gasoline and diesel prices in California already the highest in the nation. What do the posters here forecast will happen? California refineries also supply Nevada and AZ. For reference, gas prices here in eastern NC range from $2.69 to $2.89. Maybe owning an EV in California is a good idea.

US refinery capacity is heavily constrained. So yes gas prices in California will rise. Good news is there neighbors to the North have capacity and would love to sell to them.

Will probably push prices up everywhere simply because the retailers are the real crooks in the supply chain, but they all want you to believe there just the little guy.

It just means a foreign vessel could be used port to port …
This has been done several times …
Jones act says if you start and end in a US port it needs to be US built, flagged and US crewed ship. Thats all.

A foreign ship can dock in a US port and load / unload.

So back to your question - from where in the US would we ship excess refined product to California? Were short refining capacity everywhere, and there is no feasible shipping lane anyway. So it would not help in this case at least.

Best way to send freight across USA is still train.

I wrote waiver …
They run ships between the post of Houston and LA all the time …
These are the big boys …

Happy not to worry about gas prices with my EV. But, high fuel prices affect us all and increase the price of everything... your food is delivered with a diesel truck, your mail is delivered with a gas vehicle, your plumber shows up in a gas vehicle... so I do think low fuel prices are important to us all.

Yeah, they will likely put lots of irons in the fire on how to move some fuel …
Of course - we don’t even know the extent of damage yet …

KFI 640 LA reported the affected refinery is the largest on the west coast and has a 275 million barrel per day capacity.

The industry keeps refinery capacity tight on purpose since that enables fixing prices at the refinery level. The gap between their cost of crude and the price of the resulting refined products has expanded greatly.
