I read a lot here on BITOG that bypass valves in oil filters rarely open.

According to this Fram video, it cycles 25-30,000 times during the life of a vehicle. I think he meant per oil filter, due to they test them for 1,000,000 cycles.

Fram Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cttLaWepdL0

Bypass valve talk starts at 7:35. he says the above at 9:00

What do you think?

Bypass valves open every time the engine starts some times at WOT Etc. Consensus on BITOG doesn't mean it is fact.

And I am sure they don't seal tightly, which is why the obsession over the "tearolator" is ridiculous.

For most filters that have their own bypass, this isn't a problem since they're rarely run longer than 10k.

But GM's bypass in the block, it could be an issue.

with the oil the customer get today?i dont think it mather much the bypass thing for most. Only if you have a winter does it come handy. Otherwise you wouldnt notice

Add to that the fact that many cars also have an internal bypass that constantly sends a % of unfiltered oil back into the sump.

Oh the horror!

Yeah, but that oil has only went through the oil pump and not the engine - so no real added contamination. The oil pump's pressure relief valve is what you're talking about.

It's not too clear what they really mean IMO. I highly doubt the filter bypass valve is opening 25K~30K times over one oil change. That would be like it opening every 15 seconds while driving an average of 40 MPH for 5,000 miles.

Nice series of videos by Fram, and I do appreciate they are showing and telling us how they test. As to the Bypass valve issue my interpretation of what he is saying in the video is that there might be 25-35,000 cycles of the valve during an OCI, which seems unbelievable. Even a 6-month OCI is only 180 days, and if you started the car cold 10 times each day that would only be 1800 cycles. So, are they saying that the valves constantly open and close as you drive?
