Bypass settings

I notice that Pure one size 14670 (standard size for my Jeep)has the bypass setting given as 12-15 psi. The oversized 30001 has it at 8-11, which is the same as both the standard and oversize Napa Gold filters.

Any ideas about the difference? Could it have something to do with the media, and does it make much difference?

"Bypass is media dependent. So there is no problem putting a 10psi bypass on a car asking for 2 or visa versa. The bypass is set to bypass the element when the media meets a certain restriction. This amount would depend on the filter's base restriction, restriction when clogged and amount of pressure differential the media can handle. Filter's with more restriction have a higher bypass setting and filters with lower restriction. Simple as that. "

I'm not sure I buy that.
Some filters fit a very wide application.A Wix 51348 type,for example, has applications from-
GM
Mopar
Geo
Jeep
Toyota
Saab
Suzuki
Briggs & Stratton
Kohler

It's my understanding (from the Small Engine forum on this site) that the Lawn & Garden type engines can have a much lower oil pressure when at a hot idle. Some even approaching single digits.
A filter with too high of a bypass pressure could be certain death for these engines IF it were to get totally clogged.
I admit that possibility is remote for those of us that actually change their oil, but we sometimes hear of stories about people that never change their oil.

I wonder why the companies that make cars specify a filter for their engines that meet particular specs.

Why don't they just say to use any filter you can
find that fits and let it go at that?
