bypass filtration setup on an 89 Blazer?

Vehicle is an 89 S-10 Blazer, with 4.3L V6, 4X4, 700R4.

Packaging is a bit tight, to say the least!

It has the stock remote-mount fullflow oil filter setup GM built it with. I've replaced the swedged Aluminum to rubber hoses with AN fittings and braided stainless covered hose.

Want to install a Motorguard bypass filter. I also want to install an oil cooler, and am a bit confused about the optimum setup.

I can't possibly put an oil filter on the bottom of the engine due to the front axle being in the way. There's a factory remote adapter as mentioned above. I should be able to add a sandwich adapter to the filter block on the left fenderwell with little problem. Does this truck have a bypass valve in the adapter I should know about? I notice in other posts that this would cause a problem-- so I want to avoid that. I'll be ordering the filter from Ralph next Friday.

As I mentioned, I also want to install an oil cooler. Is there a problem with breaking the return-to-engine side of the factory remote mount filtration setup, running the return to the oil cooler in front of the engine, and then back to the motor? All hose will be -8AN SS braid, teflon cored. If this is not appropriate, please advise what is.

appreciate any help anyone can offer.. please?

I think I have the setup you describe on my '92 S-15. But it is a permacool sandwich. I mounted a remote full-flow (GM-stock I got off eBay) "in addition" to the normal full flow between the sandwich and engine. It is on the vertical portion of inner fender, top-driver side. This was done for no other purpose than to add oil/filtration capacity in support of extended OCI.

MG-30 sits just below it on a home-made bracket bolted to the rounded front portion of the lower innner fender. Then there's an oil cooler sitting up front behind the bumper.

Plumbing goes something like this: Permacool to the remote full flow to the cooler and back to the permacool. MG-30 is T'd off the input to the remote full flow. MG-30 returns to the rear grommet on the driver side valve cover. It was right size for a snug fit with the 1/4" hose I used. I then plugged the input in back of the carb throttle body. Don't know what that line was for (no valves or any other equipment connected in there, just a hose leading from the valve cover into back of the throttle body), and there is a PCV valve on the front grommet anyway. it has 1/2" hose on the main circuit around the permacool/FF/cooler and 1/4" hose for the MG-30.

Hope this helps...

It sounds similar to a marine engine I saw up at Lake Texoma. I took the MG-30 up there and saw it but the marine mechanics installed it. It was a 454 GM marine engine with a remote mount. 3/8" hollow bolt replacing a intake manifold bolt. The hole goes thru into the push rods. I don't know of anyone that sells those bolts now. I drill a bolt and weld a fitting on it. That seems to make marine engine owners happy when all of the filters are on top. I have a 4.3 diesel that I bet would fit right in. It is in a oldsmobile now. I returned the oil to the valve cover on it. I will use a sandwich adapter when I get the head gasket replaced.
GM complicates things with the relief valve in the filter mount. If you restrict the flow such as with a TP filter on restricted oil cooler the relief valve will open and unfiltered oil will reach the engine. With engines such as a Ford that has the relief valve in the full flow filter the relief valve in the adapter will open into the inlet of the full flow filter. If you use a universal adapter that has the relief valve the relief valve with the weakest spring will open.
You can get a teflon relief valve plug for the Chevy V8s that will convert the system to a Ford type system but I'm not sure it would fit the 4.3. The universal adapter has Ford threads 3/4"-16. My GM 4 cylinder engine has a very small relief valve. It was robbing pressure off the TP and full flow filter. Instead of plugging it I installed a remote filter adapter and tossed the full flow filter.

Ralph-

can't seem to PM you for some reason. Perhaps operator error?

VERY interested in that 4.3 diesel-- is it the V6 or V8?

If you're at all interested in selling the engine or complete car, PM me and let's talk. I need it for my 1990 Jeep Cherokee

[the Blazer will get a 5.7 Diesel. if you've a lead on that motor, same thing applies, please]

- and thank you VERY much for taking time to check out this thread. Did you happen to get my email recently referring to this thread? I'm going to be buying about 6 of your filters- 3 each motor and transmission bypass setups- over the next few months.

Also-- is worrying about including an oil cooler much ado about nothing? Should I just run a heat-tolerant oil like Mobil 1 or Amsoil and be done with it?

and one last thing-- I'm a bit confused about the relief valve issue now. I'd like to add a sandwich adapter to the remotely-mounted FF filter and put my bypass filter off of that circuit. Is this not appropriate? Should I source elsewhere? Surely you have an opinion about what is appropriate with this engine- let's hear it?

Remember, the oil you end up using may be heat tolerant but it's still being used to cool your bottom end and that's where a cooler comes in.

Ralph doesn't seem to be answering emails these days. Bad news if he wants our money. I also wish when you ask him what time it is he doesn't tell you how to build a clock

: nods : I quite agree.

I don't expect a novel-- just a "give me a call at the shop tomorrow" would be fine. But if you can't take that little bit of time to reply to someone who's talking about spending $600 with you for filters [I know that's not going to pay al lhis bills for the year, but it's still not what you'd call insignificant- and how many people might follow my advice and buy from him as well?] what does it say for customer service if there's a problem.

I believe in the product. I don't see how it would have a problem. But then, if I could see the future, I'd probably be driving something a heck of a lot nicer, wouldn't I?

I'll give him a call next week. If there's no answer or a brushoff, then my dollars will have to go elsewhere. I don't anticipate this will be the case, though.

I think one of the problems you may be having is Ralph is still on the road to recovery from his Chemo therapy. So he is not on the board as often as he used to be.

Try to email or PM him again.

OOOOoooooooohhhh... I honestly, had no idea.

VERY sorry to hear this, Ralph. I have a grandfather who went through that, and would not wish it on my worst enemy.

No worries, then-- he'll definitely get my money. Is someone else handling shipment of product for him? I'd like to get some superior filtration going on the transmission and engine, post haste.

Ralph is probably on the upside now and should be handling things with the shipping. You might try to call if you don't get an answer on your email/PM

Thanks again, Vette. I feel rather foolish now, but how would I have known?

Glad to hear he's on the upswing. I'm not what you'd call a religious person [ to put it lightly

] but he's in my "prayers"

I'm sure Ralph will come through. As Vetteman said, there are lots of reasons he could be indisposed. If he's dealing with Chemo slack is obviously in order.

I gotta admit though, his writing style can be confusing and non sequitur at times. Look at olympic or Gary Allan for example, there's two guys who know how come up with a concise answer to a technical query. I suspect it's because they carefully ponder the question. Course, it's important to do the same when asking one and to be as clear as one can.

That said I want to thank all who donate their time and talent here. Each of us knows something, together we know it all.
