Buying oil off eBay

This sounds like an inside job. Someone working at a Walmart, takes the order off eBay, takes the product off the shelf, ships it out using Walmart product, packaging and shipping service. 100% pure profit. Most theft losses come from employees.

Great thread!

Has anyone ever heard of counterfeit Motorcraft 10W30 Diesel Motor Oil being sold in quarts?

I scrutinized the containers against one sourced from a Ford dealership without finding tell-tales.

I know that fake filters and hard parts are coming from China, and other Asian counterfeiters.

I haven't found anything online yet regarding non-spec counterfeit oil.

Does anyone know if it's happening?

Thanks.

Quaker State Euro 5w-40 is $23 plus tax and free shipping from WalMart.

I recently purchased from this eBay seller for $18 per jug for the same product, and came from WalMart with free shipping in a little over a week. So a bit slower in processing the order than ordering directly from WalMart but $5 per jug less. I still don't get how they do this, or make money.

I was buying PP for $19 a jug shipped and the guy was including a roll of Scott shop towels, all drop shipped from Walmart. No idea how he made any money but he sold thousands.

It's unfortunate some sellers just aren't very good business people. I mean imagine buying something for $23 but only getting paid $18 for it.

Ask yourself, why would someone intentionally, over and over, be willing to lose money on a sale? Why would a seller in Vietnam be willing to get paid $18 which may end up in Vietnam, but spend $23? Hmm...what could be happening? And getting a 10-99K at the end of the year with all those sales reported on it?

I received an order from another seller on eBay for the Quaker State Euro 5w-40...it came from WalMart again, but this time they shipped two jugs, when I only ordered one. Nice surprise. I noticed all the sellers raised their prices some...range is now $19 to $21. Which is still a couple dollars less than ordering from WalMart directly. Shipping time is a bit longish...they can place the order with Walmart anywhere from 3 to 6 days from your time of order. Then shipping is another two to three days.

I have now bought oil several times off of eBay. It's quite a lot cheaper than Walmart or whatever. The usual prices are. Usually a 5 quart jug is probably $8 to $10 cheaper than you would pay at Walmart.

It supposedly is from Vietnam. When the oil arrived, it was fine. There are many brands, but I chose Mobil1 Extended Protection in 5w30. The jugs were factory sealed and looked totally normal. I put one of them side by side with another one I bought at Walmart. Totally identical. I couldn't find any dates indicating when they were manufactured or expired, etc.

Now this is where it gets weird. The jugs arrived in a Walmart box with Walmart packing tape on it shipped from a Walmart location. Some strange name was listed on the label as the sender. This eBay seller is not Walmart and has nothing to do with Walmart. The package was from the Walmart location in Indiana or somewhere. Definitely not Vietnam. Also, the package took like 2 days or maybe three to be shipped from Indiana to California.

So my conclusion is that someone out there obtained many jugs of oil and decided to sell it on eBay. They list themselves as a seller in Vietnam, presumably to avoid some sort of detection. I have no idea if it's stolen or some sort of a legitimate reselling operation. At any rate, I saved a few dollars and have to say that I'm happy with it.

Let me know if you have any similar experiences? Many of these sellers also sell the 12-qt cardboard box that contains a heavy plastic bag inside of it with a tap.
My experience today is the same. Shipped straight from Wally World

Yeah, I am still trying to figure it out myself.

By policy, EBAY does not allow seller drop shipping from another retailer unless it is a wholesaler but they rarely enforce it. I know externally, Walmart does run a "Business" account service for businesses to buy directly and also to drop ship from them at discount.

What is bewildering to me is that from the Walmart store retail side, their pricing is suppose to be only 3.5% above their cost. Even when Walmart online offers packaging multiples, the pricing is the same per item regardless. So how these drop shipper sellers are selling at such discount is beyond my understanding of how they are doing it?

So I purchased a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 ESP X2 0W-20 on eBay from an Indonesian seller for $21.99 with free shipping on Friday and it was sitting at my door on Saturday. I downloaded the Scantrust app to validate the QR code on the container, scanned the code on the back and it came up with a warning that it wasn’t a Scantrust secure code. I also unscrewed the top and it is a sealed container. I also tried scanning the QR code with my iPad camera and it does nothing. Attached are relevant pictures, wondering everyone's thoughts.

To me it's not worth the savings to buy oil and filters on eBay.
Too much risk of counterfeit, stolen, failed QC, or damaged products.
Especially if the seller is overseas.

Just in Walmart a few minutes ago and used that Scantrust app and it fails to authenticate also. Tried other Mobil products and other multiple brands and nothing would come up on the app as legit. App is kind of worthless if they are not going to put participating QR codes on the bottles.
