So I found a really good deal on a car. Much cheaper to have and run, because of purchase price and other stuff, compared to the other vehicles I am looking at. Problem is, the GF doesn't trust the dealer. She is literally afraid of the guy. He made her cry.

So, if you found a car that looks good from what you can see, but you know that the dealer is a rectal cavity, would you buy the car? She doesn't think that the car is in good shape, because of the way he talks. I don't know becuase I don't speak Japanese.

I do not know what the requirements in Japan are to operate a car on the road there but they must have some sort of inspection requirements. I would have it inspected by a 3rd party YOU pick to look it over first. Instincts are a good thing and I would trust her first thoughts but if it checks out ok then you should be ok. Let us know how it goes.

If he insulted her enough to make her cry it doesn't matter if you speak the lingo or not.....GO ELSEWHERE!

Made your girlfriend cry. The question is not; should I buy the car. The question is; would the consequences of assault and battery be worth teaching this sales jerk a lesson.

Of course you shouldn't buy the car.

Did she cry from something personal he said directly to her, in your presence? Or was it just his general tone or demeanor? I'm just wondering about what could have upset your GF so much, like if it's some kind of cultural misunderstanding between the stealer and her, or if she is a bit over-sensitive.

I hesitate to bring this up, but I respectfully ask that you consider if the dealer was the problem, or is this a red flag about your girlfriend.

Since I don't have any details, other than what you've shared, I can't offer specific advice.

However, it's a great opportunity to examine her actions during a "crisis" of sorts.

If she is a drama queen, doing her part to fuel the issue, it will likely not get better.

If the dealer is the problem, the answer is obvious, fire the dealer.

Either way, this is an opportunity to see what your girlfriend is made of.

It's also an opportunity for her to see what you are made of.

Choose wisely, and I'm talking more about the girlfriend than the car. Making a mistake about a car is usually easily fixed. Making a poor choice of a partner can wreck your life down the road.

So my generic advice is to be a supportive partner and see if she is the same, or just creates drama where she goes.

I'm not saying she is one way or another. I'm simply presenting the idea that this is an opportunity to see what she is made of before you take your relationship to any "next level"

(Who came up with these levels anyway? LOL.)

If it's what you need/want and the best deal in town, buy the car from him and try to make HIM cry in the process. You don't need to see this individual or use his business after that. Correct?

Johnny and I think alike on this one. It is a lose-lose situation. When something goes wrong with the vehicle, then the boyfriend with join the rectal cavity.

There are an unbelievable number of good car values out there. Life is too short to waste time, stress, etc. on a bad dealer. I would rather buy a car from an auction blind than from a bad dealer. If something is wrong with the car you guys are going to be mad at that dealer forever and associate the car with that in the future, no fun...

Bad dealers hide problems from you and they manipulate you into bad deals I think. There are too many cars and too many good dealers (or at least some good salesmen ha ha) to mess with it IMO.

If the dealer doesn't treat you/your gf with respect, I say walk away and enjoy your buying experience with some other dealer or private seller. You deserve basic respect, right? If he doesn't treat the customer with respect, how does he treat the cars? With a respectful dealer, you are more likely to get a problem free car because they may not hide problems form you as much, the dealer would be more likely to fix problems or work with you if something did go wrong, and you'll feel better about the dealer and the car in the future IMO.

Quick story, called recently to a dealer that had a saab with a "minor mechanical issue" and price was amazingly low. On the phone he said that the Turbo is bad and everything else is fine and went into great detail about hte car and owner etc. Then I asked him "You said the turbo is bad?" He immediately attacked me (over the phone that is) and said "You know what I said, the Turbo is bad! etc. etc." and got really mad.

He has probably used this "intimidation" tactic to several customers before and it worked. Maybe that is what they tried on your girlfriend? Anyway, the reason he was mad is because I caught him in a lie, the v6 saabs of that vintage had no turbos, none of the v6's had in those years. Obviously that car is not worth the stress and trying to sift out the dealer's lies even if it is an amazingly good deal. Much better to move on to another car. I am sure all the detail he gave me was made up also. There are some real scumbags out there.

She has been supportive of me in times past. I am not worried about that. She does stress over weird things. Not to turn this into a relationship thing. She said he talked to her like she was a stupid child. An older friend of ours called the guy, to see what she thought of him. I haven’t heard any condescending remarks in my direction, so he may just be a woman-hater, I don’t know. Anyway, the dealer network for the car, a Saturn, involves a store in another prefecture ordering parts from the US and waiting 1-2 months, so I passed.

Now, lets get more generic. Would you buy a car from a guy/gal if she just didn’t seem honest to you?

Another generic question...

Would you expect a car dealer to treat you any better -after- they get you money than they treat you while they are after your money?

Please don't take that as a slam on all car dealers. They aren't all bad. It's the bad 90% that give the good 10% a bad name.

No.

There are too many cars out there for sale. Its your (hers) hard-earned money. Give your money to someone you feel you can trust.

Patience has its rewards.

Great point! A drama queen girlfriend was a short lived experience for me.

It's really a shame to be so desperate or uneducated that one has to buy from a stealer. A private seller deal has so many advantages.
