I am buying my brother's subaru, it is in storage across the river from detroit, I have the canadian title.
Can I just put it on a trailer and tow it across the border with my dmax?

Not without lots of paperwork and research.

See the US federal government's importation rules, here:
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/
The second item listed has to do with Canadian-market vehicles specifically.

Note that some vehicles are not importable under any circumstances, if they are less than 25-model-years old.

ok, the vehicle is a subaru outback 1996, assembled in usa.
I think it was a us vehicle that my bro took to canada and left it there.

Where it was assembled isn't important.

That you "think" it was a US-market vehicle doesn't help much. You need to make certain that it's a US-market vehicle, in which case importation should be easy -- provided you have the correct paperwork.

Checking for market will be easy: Get the VIN, and call Subaru corporate. They may even be able to help with the cross-border paperwork.

Subaru corporate whom? Subaru of North America/ USA may be the US importer and hate hate hate the idea of a grey market importation, and not help at all. But it is just a phone call.

Proving it was once titled in the US might be helpful. If the brother "moves back" to the states with the car he's had "all along" this could also ease the situation.

Is this car that special?

car is not special, it is just accumulating storage fees.
I am heading out to dmv here in MI to find out what i need to tfr title, then I will just tow it over

True. I've seen cars assembled in local assembly plants where every eighth car or so has the entire dashboard in arabic - obviously meant for export to the Mid-East.

One of my cars was built in Ontario, bought new in Michigan.

Somewhere on the car, possibly the drivers door post, it will say that it meets all the requirement of the USA if it is a car made for the USA. If you can't find such a statement, then you can take the VIN to the DMV and they should be able to tell if it is a USA vehicle. FWIW

It may be a bit more complex than that.

Googling, I found this page:
http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/faq site/pages/page2.html#Anchor-64185
containing this statement:
6. Re-importing a U.S.-certified vehicle.
If a vehicle now outside the U.S. bears a certification label
affixed by its original manufacturer stating that the vehicle
complies with all applicable FMVSS in effect on its date of
manufacture, it can be imported as a conforming motor vehicle
under Box 2A on the HS-7 Declaration form that must be given
to Customs at the time of entry. You can download a copy
of that form from our website at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import.

Hopefully your DMV is familiar with the procedures and forms, otherwise you may be making a wasted trip to the border.

Now I wish that vehicle was something special.
here is what dmw pointed me to:

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/425/~/registering-a-foreign-registered-vehicle,-car-or-motorcycle-in-the-u.s.-with

&^%%$, I hate paperwork, so I guess I will be at the border filling out paperwork.

Only bright side is that the car used be in TX, not sure how I can prove that, maybe a carfax???

You can definitely try

Is it old enough not to need title in the USA?
