I saw a something in google news today for Patriotic Country 2 - some new CD from Sony. it's got that new song 'bumper of my SUV' from Chely Wright.

Be careful hearthunter, we have a fair amount of anti-SUV activitists here. My guess is a fifty-fifty split with the most vocal being on the negative side.

Since when did the type of vehicle that a person drives determine their level of partiotism anyway? As far as I can tell, the chevy cobalt driver is as patriotic as the SUVer, if not more, because they bought a made in the USA (Lordstown, Ohio built) vehicle, got the GM pensioners their $1000 per vehicle that they need for living money and healthcare, and gave a LOT less money in evil evil taxes, as well as less profit to evil evil OPEC. But thats a can of worms not to open.

It is this kind of expression in music that polarizes Americans. What good does it do? I cant think of anything good that comes out of a tune blaming or degrading other Americans, except cause more internal friction during a time when people really should be getting together for the greater good... I am a fan of country music, and I GREATLY appreciate the sacrifice that many servicepeople are making, leaving family and friends to be in the mid east and all the other places they are serving, but come on...

you wouldnt want someone else making a song saying how dumb that redneck, or that showoff city slicker for that matter is for making OPEC and the house of saud richer because they were guzzling fuel in their SUV, so why should they badmouth anyone for anything. The writer does not even know that the woman was giving the finger because of the marines sticker on the bumper. For all I know, the minivan driver didnt like that Wright was driving too slow, or maybe she threw her cigarette butt out the window, and it hit the minivan, or she accidentally cut the minivan driver off a mile back while pondering the lyrics of a new song. Maybe it didnt even happen, but apparently you need someone to blame in a "patriotic" tune.

So I guess the woman in the minivan, who apparently is anti-military isnt a worthy american... Just because she may have an opinion, right or wrong. I know, lets write a song about deporting her!

Or maybe we should just go back to writing songs that praise our servicepeople for the sacrifice and great work that they do, and put the blame on the real enemy, not our fellow Americans!

I can't believe how quickly this thread devolved into a discussion about societal downfall when the first thing that should have been brought up is the fact that Chely Wright is one fabulous babe!! Aside from that, she has a brother in the military so that is probably why she has her head on straight. Unlike many other ingrate stars...

The problem is not with the SUVs...its with the manufacturers who refuse to put in high efficiency diesel engines.

I drove my 2003 GMC Crew Cab Duramax from NJ to Vermont yesterday, all on interstate, speeds up to 75 mph or so. It has a cap that improves the aero and makes it look, at a glance, like a 2500 Suburban. Its loaded rolling weight is about 6950 lbs.

I got 25 mpg on the interstate parts of the trip, and about 22 in the hills.

I have been on work assignment outside the USA and see all kinds of turbodiesel vehicles, including SUVs. But here.....nothing, other than the Ford Excursion, and the small Jeep Liberty. No GM diesel SUVs since 1999.

And part of the problem may be that they are not California certified, and four more states, including my home of Vermont, have tied their emission standards on new vehicles registered in the state to the most restrictive state standard....California.

I agree totally with those rap stations, I was in the gym yesterday and there was a station like that on the radio. Man, I was amazed. Worse yet, I recently got sirius satelite radio, and my GF and I were going over every single channel. I was amazed at the language and offensive material discussed in that music. Maybe folks (of any race), who portray that ghetto lifestyle or are ghetto wannabes dont find that offensive, just a way of life? Maybe so, it always amazes me how the trailer trash types portray themselves on shows like Jerry Springer, why would it be any different if its from good old white trash redneck ghetto wannabe mixes, or if its real true packin' dealin' rapper-type, theyre all doing injustice to themselves, and fueling all osrts of stereotypes.

But IMO this song is doing more harm by trashing other Americans that may have other opinions, than the SUV/minivan relevance.

The best thing that ALL cultures can do is stop participating in supporting poor behavior. Most rap music, Jerry Springer/Maury Povich garbage, 95% of Hollyweird, 75% of pro sports, and 50 to 60% of elected officials....all negative and damaging to our society as a whole. In MY OPINION, they are all worthy of ignoring and/or expungement.

Well, Andrews, that's the problem that most of us don't quite see ...yet. All of those entertainment enterprises have an audience that they are pandering to. Most of us are just removed from that audience...but the audience is what fuels the viability of the medium. We see Jerry Springer as something like a carnival side show ..with all the this and that that doesn't exist in our lives. The part we can't conceive is that this is the type of thing that many consider normal or typical. We think that these shows promote and endorse the behavior. This is truly so to a certain extent ..but they don't pander to a non-existant audience. These are the type of people that are representing a lager demographic in our society.
