I put one of the blue Purolaters on my Jeep the last time I changed the oil.

I put on the larger 30001 filter. Ever since the engine has knocked when started after sitting more than a few minutes.

Change it or just run it another 2k untill it's time to change it again.

Looks like you get a bad ADBV. If it annoys you too much ..change it out. You're hearing the lifters before they pump up (about 3 secs, maybe) Heck, this is a golden oportunity to get Purolator to test the filter with one of those filter reclamation kits. So far no one has appeared to have used this service, IIRC. The great thing is, you know the condition before you send it to them without having to cut it open.

It's up to you. I don't think that you're doing a darn thing to the engine by keeping it in ..at least in any measurable way.

Actully it's not the lifters bleeding down but a main bearing knock. Lifters go click this goes thump, thump.

It also makes this noise when I change the oil and filter since I gotta put the filter on empty.

Most likely the main farthest from the pump?

Easy enough to check how fast that adbv actually drains out..

fill the filter full of oil and then cork or bolt that center hole and upside-down-she-goes..

Blue filter as in pl30001 PureOne???
If so, try the white purolator L30001. You know, the cheaper premium filter. Some vehicles that I've used the Pureone in had a startup knock. I think that boutique filters in certain engine might just be too restrictive.

For $3, I'd run out and swap filters ASAP to see if it IS the cause of the problem!

Ya that filter.

Replaced with a $2.00 Champ "clicker"! The last filter I removed was a clicker and When I cut it open it was ok as in no torn media or other funky's so I'm not afraid of them.

Co-worker came by my desk and told me he is going back to Fram.

Because the Purolator P+ I recommended is causing start-up noise that he never heard with Fram before.

It is a 93 Nissan Altima with 200K (Factory, many many Frams, P+), and side mounted filter. I told him the ADBV is probably bad as an isolated incident and try another one. I certainly hate to see him put on another orange can!

I tried a Pure one on my turbo dodge and had rattle in the morning as well. Thought I had some engine trouble but went back to a supertech and it stopped. I also had my oil pressure gauge swinging from high to low while driving on the highway, that went back to normal with the supertech, it stays in the middle now. Just tried that one purolator filter, for whatever reason my engine didn't like it. I won't try one again when the supertech is only $2 and works for me.

I've always worried about knocking in engines. If I could stop this by simply installing another oil filter, that's what I would do.

I tried a Purolator Pure One on my 1999 Silverado (4.8L) towards the end of last winter and had a terrible start-up noise in the morning. Tried a Purolator Powerflo (re-badged Premium Plus) after reading numerous posts on this subject and the noise went away immediately. I really do think that the Pure Ones are somewhat restrictive. Just my $.02

I had the same issue with my Jeep and the same filter. A couple years ago I had a Purolator air filter for my 97 F150, that somehow managed to get built without sealing the ends of the pleats. I caught this before I installed it so no damage was done, but I will never buy another Purolator product.

Purolator filters generally have a good reputation on this forum. Reading about these problems gives me pause.

Agreed. I've yet to have a bad Purolator and that includes all the Motorcraft filters I've used over the years, but I only have one vehicle where the filter is mounted such that I'd notice a bad ADBV.

It's starting to look like the Wix filters are the only ones we've seen without problems...

Strange, I get the exact opposite from when I switched to a SuperTech from a Purolator Plus on my 90 Cutlass. This is in the summer time too. I've always used the PureOne on the V6 02 Accord and have never, ever heard anything from that engine.
There has been many discussion on the restrictiveness of Purolator PureOne's but that was all speculation.
I hate to ask, but since you went to a larger filter, did you compensate for the oil amount?

I'm not saying they are bad filters in general, but I have had two bad filters from them. and I won't buy another one.

The air filter in my old Ford truck was a cone type filter, I happened to look inside it to see if there were any pin holes, and discovered that every single pleat was wide open at the end. I took it back into the store (did this in the parking lot) and found that the other one they had in stock had the same problem.

I then gave their oil filter a try because I was out of what I like to use (Donaldson, #2 Fleetguard), and I had the Fram like start up noises.

They may be the best thing since pop corn, but I won't try them again.

I will also add this that the single worst filter problem I have had was with a Wix air filter in a class 8 truck with Catrerpillar engine. The Donaldson, and Fleetguard filters used a foam rubber seal, thus it did not matter what side the dirty air was on. The direct cross wix filter used a lip typre seal, thus allowing the dirty air to suck past the seal. this truck was used to haul gravel to country roads, in less than 10,000 miles the engine was toast.he only part that was able to be reused was the block.
Wix came out and said oh yea, huh. they did change that filter to a foam rubber seal, but never paid a cent on the engine repair.

Everyone makes a screw up from time to time.

Sorry to hear that. Can't say anything like that has happen to me. Maybe it was a bad lot number, but regardless, it shouldn't have happened in the first place.
