Last weekend I changed a wheel bearing on my car and it made me realize that I probably should build up a decent tool set, or at least start doing so.
I work for an industrial supplier and have access to a lot of products at cost and 7%, including the full Proto line.
I don't want to spend too much money, but I want good stuff to fill in gaps in what I have access to.
To change that wheel bearing I needed the following I didn't have:
- 36 mm deep socket (for axle nut)
- 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 foot-pounds)
- 1/2" drive torque wrench (25-250 foot-pounds)
- I broke a 13 mm socket undoing the hub bolts and need a decent set of metric sockets
- 6" three-jaw puller
I can get a Proto 6006C 3/8" drive micrometer torque wrench for less than $100, so I was thinking about getting that, a fine drive 3/8" ratchet (I know they don't like torque but that's what a breaker bar is for) and a set of 3/8" drive standard and metric sockets. I have decent combination wrenches and I don't deal in big fasteners or torque when I work so I figure that if I spend my money on what is going to work best and the longest. I'm 21 so if I buy it now, as long as I don't lose anything, I'll probably not wear them out in my lifetime.
Right now I only use the half inch drive for torquing wheels and large nuts like the axle nut (175 foot-pounds). I have a beam bar torque wrench I use for doing lugs because it's accurate enough, and I don't know if I can justify the expense of having a half inch torque wrench laying around to be used a few times a year.
I need some good C-clamps and a decent jaw puller as well. Bessey and OTC, or what does the hive here reccomend. As well, is my logic on the right track?
