I am one that dislikes a LOT of the mandated, useless garbage placed in cars/trucks. Seems like there is more and more of it every year. If U could build or have a vehicle built without ANY government restrictions at all. What would it be? Lets have some fun with this.

I'm kinda lazy so I'd start with something already, and go from there. But if it was sky is the limit... For fair weather driving I'd probably go V8, 6MT, RWD. Not sure if I'd go sedan or wagon, but it'd be 4 doors. "Skinny" pillars for good visibility, low beltline. EFI, probably port injection; and catalytic convertor. Dunno if I'd put in ABS or not, but 4 wheel disc brakes. Not sure on actual size; my old Camry feels like a good size (but my newer one feels too big).

Winter vehicle would be AWD, somehow, and most likely with ABS.

Maybe I should split the difference: winter AWD is wagon and large, maybe like station wagons of old; while summer car is sporty 4 door sedan.

1952 Plymouth flathead six with turbo and EFI, 12v conversion, etc. Light (for the time) with decent interior space. Prolly update the front end to Must II IFS with disk brakes. Would be a good family hauler when the grand-baby comes to visit

Or, pontoon Rambler from the early 1950's with a 308 ci Hudson six with same (turbo & efi). A bit trickier redoing the front suspension, but doable ...

Or, for personal vehicle, 1957 Chevy frame rails and tags (any model rust bucket doner) and a quality 57 Vette kit car chassis to move all the VIN code stuff to. Sky's the limit from there

All would be 100% Cali exempt from any regs

Or, a 2-stroke Saab or DKW just so I could smoke my way around the world and drive the "Greenies" nuts as I went on my way

That is half the reason I'd like to have a '32 Ford street machine built as a daily driver for myself. If the price of new cars goes up any higher, this may be an attractive alternative.

There already is an outfit that is building Tri-Five (55-56-57) Chevrolets with brand new parts. The problem is they are hand-built and cost $170K per copy. If they could move this to assembly line production, they could get the cost down to compete with new cars.

It would probably pollute less as it would be a plug in turbo diesel electric hybrid with two fuel tanks, one for diesel one for warm operation to put whatever garbage I feel like.
Personally, I dont mind the useless garbage any more, a little too old to throw fits. I have spent enough time in stop and go traffic behind a 60s Chevy smelling the fumes for much longer than I'd like.

Yes, because pre-regulation was such as great place to be...

(technically there was some regulation here too)

The reason for those "mandates" is not that they are intrusions but less invasive requirements to protect against human behavior/nature... I would rather have a regulated imperfect vehicle than any unregulated "perfect" vehicles because the "perfect" would be a bald-face lie.

VWMS, or Volkswagen MotorSport, still has a large stock of un-used Mk2 Golfs.

A syncro floorpan with a Golf R engine, 02Q 6 spd and 2x Torsen diffs would be nigh-on unbeatable.

Might I add that U can “build” more than one vehicle. Eg. one for winter, summer, off road etc. U can keep all the mandated regs and nannies U want to.

There was an outfit that sold an Auburn boat tail body to fit on the mid '70s Ford LTD ...
A '47 Dodge business coupe retro-mod with XJ6 drive line and a modern EFI would be fun too.

Since I drive pick-ups and full-sized SUV's, I'll take my chances in a wreck. I have a few million miles w/o a serious wreck since I quit street racing (as a teenager and into my early 20's). Wrecks can be avoided is you are not distracted.

Always wanted an Audi 4000 5+5 with Quatro running gear

But, around here it would be a smog car ...

Outlaw cell phones in cars period, and we could do with a lot less "crumple" engineering ...

I don't believe the newer cars are better built for crashes than "All" the older cars.
Maybe Pintos. I had a 1969 Cadillac DeVille and I could drive that thing through a house and out the other side.

I'd be pretty happy with alot of OE cars with a few tweeks. A reliable diesel Jeep Liberty with a properly spaced 6 speed manual, stretched a little for decent cargo space would be a great family hauler/tow vehicle for me. Tweek the diesel a little more for mileage than emissions
For a commuter, a rwd Mazda3? Maybe with a mild turbo or a small light pushrod V8. No need for 400+hp, but scale the Corvette's 6.1L down until it produces 300hp.
Maybe just an RX-8 with a 2.3 ecoboost would work too.

Model year 2028 Ford F250. 2.3L Ecoboost gen 3 with 14:1 compression, twin scroll turbo, super high pressure direct injection, gasoline exhaust fluid, gasoline particulate filter, 12 speed automatic and runs on 94 octane. GM's push for a higher standard octane dating back to 2017 made 87 octane go bye bye.

To the OP:
Please list all the things that regulations require to be on a car...at least the ones which are useless.

I don't ask this to break your shoes or be contrary. I just want to know where to start on my "build".

1/2 ton truck , inline six gas engine (no direct injection or turbo) and 5 speed manual trans with a locking differential (G80 type).

No one has answered the OP's question.

I can't think of anything government mandated that I'd remove.

I love seat belts, ABS, back up camera, air bags, safety crush zones in a crash, standards for tires, hands free phone calls, breathing cleaner air, gas tanks that don't explode easily

I read it as, what'd you design & run if there were no regulations in the way? 1,000hp dragster with big'n'littles, F1 car, Jeep with no doors and a 6' lift?
