Broken power steering pulley shaft!

Has anyone ever had a power steering pump pulley shaft snap? This happened leaving my truck without power steering or brakes because the power steering pump is the brake booster, GM's Hydro-boost. I have had pumps fail from a blown hose or seal, causing them to run dry and destroy themselves, but never snapping the pulley shaft. Luckily, this happened on my property while towing my wood chipper from the last pile to the house. I can only imagine how bad this could have been had this happened in traffic, not being able to steer or stop without extreme effort or at all. Any thoughts on how to prevent this from happening again or what caused it? My guess is 40 years of use?

Seems rare. How is it tensioned?

I've seen sector shafts break (also rare) but not a pump shaft. Was this a Sag?

It has a serpentine belt spring tensioner with all parts in good condition belt has no cracks or splits, the idler spins smooth and quiet, spring moves and provides plenty of belt tension. Google said turning and breaking is too much together for the pulley shaft. When this happened, no breaking or turning, just moving straight ahead, then a pop sound, the steering wheel wouldn't move very easily, and the break peadel whent to the floor. Thank god I was not going downhill

Again, if this is a Sag, definitely a fluke. Pretty sure the LMM for my non-profit uses a Sag and that's hydroboost, so I'm guessing this is what you have, too.

I don't know if shaft diameters ever changed much? I wouldn't think so. @clinebarger would know but I thought a Sag was a Sag was a Sag with the primary difference being where the hose connections were. Typically if you can swap the Spam reservoir you can use a Dodge Sag in GM etc...? I thought?

I do not know what the definition of "Sag" is. Please let me know, it sounds important. You can buy just the pump and reuse the reservoir. I bought one with the reservoir installed

Would also be super interesting if it was a 5/8" you broke! Could suggest someone or a rebuilder swapped in the wrong pump/internals at some point in the vehicle's life.

edit: but then the pulley wouldn't fit, either......so probably not

Was the tension too tight?

OK, I'm stupid "Sag" means Saginaw Pump:oops: . I like it being a fluke because it is (was originally) a Saginaw Pump. Thank you. Hope the new one lasts as long
