Briggs V-Twin Just Stopped

I'm definitely going to inspect and adjust the valves assuming the valve guides are okay and the push rods aren't bent. I have adjusted valves before, but have seen three descriptions as to how to adjust. Which do you folks recommend?
1. TDC on the compression stroke for both valves.
2. 1/4" past TDC. (Some guys have said this is Briggs' spec.)
3. Adjust one valve when the other valve is fully compressed. i.e. Adjust the intake when the exhaust is fully compressed and vise versa.

Anything is possible but I have a hard time thinking it is valve clearance when the engine is running fine one minute and dies the next and cannot be restarted. Everytime I had a valve clearance issue, it was gradual not abrupt. The engine could run on one cylinder and to have messed up valves on both cylinders would be very unusual.

Safety devices/ switches etc. can prevent starting as well, depending on the manufacture. Low oil level will prevent a start on some.
Check the simple things first before diving into something major.
