Briggs 900 OHV - Valve Adjustment?

I purchased a new tiller with a Briggs & Stratton 900 series OHV. It has an unusually loud knocking in the valvetrain, which is loudest near the exhaust port on the head.

It's not loud enough to make me think there is a serious problem, but it's a noise that is not present on my OHV 173cc Kohler engine on my pressure washer or OHC Honda lawnmower engine, so it has me concerned.

What are the steps to check the valve lash to make sure it is in tolerance? Or is this valvetrain noise normal?

If it's new why don't you take it back to where you bought it from OR to an authorized Briggs repair shop and have them take a look at it?

This is a place that won't touch it unless there's some obvious problem, like smoking, connecting rods hanging outside the engine block, etc.

Besides, I don't want the hassle of carting it back and forth places unless I'm confident there's actually a problem, and I'm not.

Anyone know how to check the valve clearance on these motors?

Check here and see if your engine is listed for the valve clearance. If it is post back and i will give you directions if not post the engine number.

One of the few things I didn't learn here or by trial and error was how to adjust valves on an OHV. I went to YouTube and typed in valve adjustment small engine. There are several videos to choose from. I watched the one below to get the basic idea.

Engine number is 12T402, horizontal shaft.

So I assume this is 120000 on that chart, meaning .005 intake / .01 exhaust?
