I just bought a newer but used Yard Machines riding mower that has the 12.5 I/C engine. The previous owner said he changed the oil 2x a season and replaced the plug 1x a year.

I drained the oil right away, and refilled with Amsoil's heavy duty synthetic 10w30, the same stuff I use in my boat (5.7l) and my push mowers/snowblower. Im wondering if that is a good choice for this engine?

I also replaced the air filter and fuel filter

I gotta admit, I love new things to tinker around with!

That oil is about as good as it gets. If you already use it and have it on hand, all the better. Any quality 30wt will do fine for typical residential use.

Thanks! I noticed in the owners manual from Briggs & Stratton, it warned against using straight 30w in temps below 40F because it may "result in bore damage due to oil starving". I might attached a blade to the front and plow my driveway with it in the winter, if thats the case I will switch to 5w30 syn.
