I was doing some research to update some SDS, and I see now that Break-Free CLP has 1 to 5% canola. It's not a huge amount, but I still would prefer it not to have any seed oil in there. What is it's purpose besides a cheap filler?

This is another case of what you don't know wont hurt you. Canola is hydrophobic. It will push the water off the metal surface and adhere to it helping to prevent rust.

I still have a partial can of the old Breakfree- I'm not convinced the current version is the same.

Works great on my semi-auto sporting clays gun magazine tube. I run it wet and the fouling wipes right off.

2 parts ATF, 1 part STP, 1 part Mobil 1 in whatever weight you have. An old ANG armorer I used to shoot with recommended it to me. Best gun lube I’ve ever used.

Engine oil by itself is an amazing lube. It’s all I use and have for years since I left the Infantry.
With this mix you also get the clinginess of STP and the penetrating power of ATF. I agree that purely as a lubricant all any shooter ever needs are whatever drippings are left in the bottle after an oil change.

I highly doubt it. Would you you replace the PAO in your motor oil with canola?
Online searches state the US military changed their specification for CLP in 2017 (MIL-PRF-63460E) which necessitated a forumulation change of Break Free to meet the new requirements.

This is the key point for me:
  • Canola oil can become rancid over time, so it’s best suited for short-term or intermittent lubrication needs.

Often, I will shoot a gun, clean it, lube it and not touch it again for years.

So, I’m glad to know that the new Breakfree should be on my “avoid” list.

I wonder if that gummy broken down vegetable oil type mess is prevented by the petroleum and additives?

Somehow it’s a feature, I doubt it’s a cost cutting measure. Maybe it’s so they can say it’s bio based?

I don’t care to find out…

1/20 of the formula is canola so I doubt the mixture will go rancid or get gummy.

The govt was on a big green initiative during the last administration so that’s my guess as to why they added a 1/20 mixture of bio oil. That or cost cutting.

I highly doubt it diminishes the product at all. Breakfree CLP has always been an excellent product. I use the synthetic Breakfree performance gun oil as my duty oil of choice on my issued P320 and it stays put.
